This is an interesting book about the first Vice President to assume the Presidency upon the death of the President. President Tyler set many of the precedents that remain today. Some in Congress wanted to call him acting President until a new election but Tyler would have none of that. He was also the first President married in the White House. He expanded the US borders, annexed Texas and after trying to stop a Civil War became a traitor to many in history by siding with his State of Virginia. He was a Whig and much of the coalition that put him in office resembles the current coalition for the incoming Administration less of course the Slave Holders. This is an interesting book by Gary May.
