It is 1900 and the World Fair is in full swing in Paris. There are exciting innovations and many exhibits. The magnificent Grand Palais and Petit Palais as well as the (bridge) Pont Alexandre III had been constructed for this Universal Exposition. Here at the Grand Palais the grand masters of French art, David, Ingres and Delacroix, had their works on display for the 39 million visitors from all over the world to admire. The crowds loved the Palace of Electricity and the amazing technological advancements in sound and colour photography presented by the likes of PathГ©, Gaumont, etc.Enter a nineteen year old Spaniard and some of his friends. This Spaniards name was Pablo Picasso. The scene shifts to Montmartre, known for its night life and also a popular haunt of artists. Imagine the top of the hill full of dilapidated houses and cramped studios (yes, Puccinis La BohГЁme springs to mind) and at the foot of the hill there were cafГ©s, bars and nightclubs such as the Folies BergГ©re and the Moulin Rouge where girls kicked up their long legs and did the splits. Ladies of negotiable virtue, beautiful artists models, poverty stricken artists, unscrupulous art dealers buying works of art for the price of an artists rent plus a free drink... it all happens here. At the foot of the Butte de Montmartre, the women came and went, their hair dyed black as coal, their mouths and cheeks rouged the colour of poppies. In the cafГ©s they sat hunched over glasses of blue- green absinthe.And here in Montmartre we meet other artists too. We follow the lives not only of Picasso, but also of Henri Matisse, Braque, Vlaminck, Van Dongen, Utrillo, Marie Laurencin, the dandy Derain and later we also meet Modigliani. We see the progression of their art; we follow Picasso through his sad blue period after the tragic suicide of a friend, his later more optimistic rose period and so on until eventually we learn how the so-called Cubism came about and what it actually means. There is the shift to Fauvism in 1905: The result was that figures and shapes became extended, even distorted, anticipating by some years the first movements towards abstraction. There were other major influences on the artists such as CГ©zannes sensational portrait of his wife, ethnic figure carvings, Iberian statues: And the proportions of his figures were changing, as he moved away from the classical ideal of beauty, creating instead larger heads, heavy shoulders and narrow hips, in keeping with the forms and features of Iberian sculpture.We take a detour to Callioure, France, near the Spanish border where locals spoke Catalan and regarded those from beyond the village as foreigners. This is where Matisse settles for a while and develops new techniques and a new style. Matisse abandons his familiar style of different shades of grey (no, not those!) and experiments with bolder colours. Derain dazzles and bewilders the locals on his arrival by wearing a smart white suit and a bright red beret. Derain also changes his style here in the dazzling sunlight of Callioure and moves from Pointillism to broad flat strokes of colour. Back to Paris where Picasso is in love with the circus and is busy painting harlequins in his rose period. He and other artists are often seen at the Lapin Agile (which still exists).We learn not only about the changing styles of the artists, but about their lives, their loves and their passions.But these were not the only art forms alive and well at the time. What about Monsieur Poiret, the great fashion designer of the time? Yes, he was there. Also Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes which caused a sensation. Nijinsky! Then motion pictures became the rage.There are other colourful characters such as Michael, Leo and Gertrude Stein. Alice B. Toklas. Social events at the Stein home where artists meet and discuss. 1906 was a year of much upheaval in France and also marks the arrival on the scene of Amadeo Modigliani with his dissolute lifestyle. 1907 is the year of the cinema. There are composers Stravinsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. The list of interesting, talented people goes on and on.This non-fiction book about life in Montmartre at the start of the 20th century is not only crammed full of facts, but it is very accessible and written in a vibrant manner which at times made me feel as though I sat amongst these artists as they drank their wine and discussed art and the events of the day.If you like opera, may I suggest that you read this book whilst listening to Mimi and Rodolfo singing their hearts out (La BohГЁme by Puccini). Imagine them sitting at a cafГ© in Montmartre, holding hands, and Mimi sporting her newly acquired and treasured bonnet.
