Good apocalypse bookGood apocalypse book. Most books in this genre are sort of awkward prepper hero stories. The hero being a thinly veiled version of the prepared author lecturing from a fantastical hind sight point of view.The protagonist in this book is clearly the author. But he does a poor job of prepping. Not to spoil things too much, but people die because of his poor tactical decisions and lack of foresight. Hes even a terrible liar. The book also avoids all the grinding recitation of tactical maneuvers. So thats refreshing. Its also refreshing that the biggest heroes in the book... wait for it... work for the government. Yea, imagine that.One gripe I might have is that some of the characters didnt make sense to me. Like they would be strong willed and very loyal to family but then later one finds out theyre also shallow gossipers with terrible judgement. I realize we all react poorly at times to stress, but I got the split personality feeling with some of the characters. My impression is that character coherency was sacrificed for the story.The research was impressive. The book had me googling a lot for things related to viruses and ebola. I am now a bit overly concerned about the future of our species. But something tells me that any future pandemics wont get this bad... hopefully. But the googling definitely conveyed a feeling of, its perfectly possible.As an aside, theres an interesting moral dichotomy between characters who essentially made the same choice: to deliberately, or at least risk, becoming infected with the virus. The moral dilemma being rooted in the contagious nature of the disease. When is it ok knowing that infecting others later was highly probable.Another moral question explored in the book is when is it okay to utterly destroy ones enemy. Ebola K presented unique opportunities that were exploited by both good and bad people. I mean, do selfish owners of motels really deserve an ebola infected resident? But that question is already really well explored in the history of fiction.
