Als die Kantaki ihm ihre Hilfe verweigern, erinnert er sich an seine Jugendliebe Lidia, die inzwischen Pilotin eines Kantakischiffs ist. Um sie zu finden, schreckt er nicht einmal davor zurück, einen Krieg auszulösen, der sein eigenes Wirtschaftsimperium ins Verderben stürzen könnte. Mit Diamant legt Andreas Brandhorst eine Space Opera gigantischen Zuschnitts vor: Die Handlung spielt Jahrtausende in der Zukunft, nach einem Zeitkrieg, von dem zahlreiche Anomalien zeugen, in denen die normalen Gesetzmäßigkeiten von Zeit und Raum außer Kraft gesetzt sind. Die beiden Hauptfiguren Valdorian und Lidia, zwischen denen die Handlung sich kapitelweise abwechselt, besuchen im Laufe des Romans nicht nur eine ganze Reihe verschiedener Welten, sondern auch fremde Dimensionen. Besonders in diesen Abschnitten stellt Brandhorst seine fantastische Imaginationskraft unter Beweis: Seine Welten schillern, wachsen, splittern in tausend Farben. Die Handlung beginnt wortwörtlich mit einem Knall, gönnt einem dann ein paar kleine Verschnaufpausen, um sich in das Universum des Romans einzufinden, um ziemlich genau in der Mitte des Romans ein paar überraschende Wendungen zu nehmen. Was dann kommt, möchte man am liebsten in einem Stück lesen. Die rasante Erzählweise und das Universum mit seinen zahlreichen Alienspezies und bizarren Welten liefern dabei nur die Bühne, auf der die beiden Hauptfiguren grundlegende persönliche Entscheidungen treffen müssen. Valdorian, der zynische Materialist, wäre zutiefst unsympathisch, wenn er nicht feststellen müsste, wie sehr gerade er von sozialen Bindungen abhängig ist. Und die Individualistin Lidia, die alle Bindungen zu Gunsten der Erforschung des Kosmos aufgegeben hat, muss sich im Laufe der Handlung mit den Lebensmöglichkeiten, die sie ausgeschlagen hat, auseinander setzen. Brandhorst dosiert diese Elemente sparsam genug, um nicht moralisierend zu werden -- der Schwerpunkt liegt durchweg auf dem Fortgang der Handlung. Diamant ist ein Weltraumabenteuer, das den Vergleich mit Dan Simmons SF-Werken durchaus standhält. --Jakob Schmidt
