Two very interesting plays. I could not get anywhere with _Comedy of Vanity_, I think in large part because the satire of it (I am given to understand from the introduction) is in Canettis scrupulous reproduction of the ways particular segments of Austrian society spoke, and how those forms of speech reveal class attitudes. Translated into English, it loses a great deal, and what there is the plot -- the government destroying mirrors and all -- is too heavy handed on its own._Life-Terms_, however, is brilliant. It is speculative fiction, about a society in which at birth everyone is given a sealed locket to wear, and inside the locket is a piece of paper saying at what age they will die. Everyone is named with the age of their death, and society has stratified around this knowledge; those with high numbers have built-in societal privilege, sought after as marriage partners and trusted as colleagues, seen as inherently superior, while short-termers are considered selfish, hedonistic, and vulgar. So life expectancy replaces money -- explicitly, even, one of the characters describes says, You are born with a certain capital of years -- and this in turn determines your place in society. And then to complicate the matter, birthdays and ages are a deep secret, never to be revealed; children are taught them by their parents, taught they are a secret, and then the parent is supposed to forget -- so everyone is named with their age at death and nobody ever talks about how old they are. All of that is the background, but because it is a play, it is all shown through dialogue, many short scenes, never more than two people speaking at a time, and of course the point of the play is to interrogate that background; is this the utopia the citizens believe it to be, or the dystopia the protagonist claims it is, or something else? There are no answers. I cannot imagine what it would be like performed, but it really is brilliant, it reminds me of Caryl Churchill. I must read more Canetti.Thinking over that, I want to add one more thing; I appreciated the brilliance, but I did not enjoy it. Some pleasure for the craft of it, but a sharp-edged sort, and thus not the fifth star.
