Summary: Arthur is a typical big brother. His little sister, Violet, annoys him. She is always asking for help and doing things that Arthur doesnt like. Arthur likes to tell his pen pal about it. His pen pal is named Sandy. Sandy has one older brother and they do karate together. Arthur is jealous of his big brother. As the story goes on Arthur gets into some mischief. He makes a mess in his room and pretends to take a bath and gets caught. Violet does not get involved in any mischief, and Arthur is frustrated by this, often pointing out that Sandy does not have a little sister. Arthur writes a letter to Sandy requesting a picture and saying he wants to switch places with Sandys big brother. When Sandy writes back she sends a picture. It is revealed that Sandy is a girl! After seeing the good relationship Sandy has with her older brother, Arthur begins to realize how much he appreciates Violet! In the end, Arthur is glad he has a little sister. Themes: One theme present in this book is the theme of long distance friendship. Arthur and Sandys long distance friendship shows kids that proximity is not vital to a fun and healthy friendship. Another theme is gender roles and stereotypes. Arthur assumes because Sandy does karate that she is a boy. But people of all genders can participate in a variety of activities. Personal response: As I was reading this book I was confused about why Arthurs relationship with Violet seemed to be the most important part of the story. That became clear when it was revealed that his pen pal is a girl too! I really liked this book. I think the characters are relatable to both boys and girls.Recommendations: This book could be a valuable read in several situations. One of them being if a child has a friend who is moving away. It is a great way to start a conversation about long distance friendships. Another situation where this book could be very helpful is to discuss gender roles. This could be used to start a conversation about how all toys and activities are fun for boys and girls! I would not recommend this book for a child with an unusually short attention span as the beginning of the book is slow and I think the child could have a difficult time engaging with the story and characters.
