Jonathan plays a game called Gotcha in which he hunts and is hunted by other students with paint guns. After a big win, he goes off for a vacation in France where he meets the sexy Sasha who says she is only interested in him because he is a virgin. She takes him with her to East Germany where they are separated and he has to escape back to the west on his own, all the while being trailed by East German spies. He arrives home only to find the game is still going on, and a canister of film is in his backpack. Then Sasha re-appears.
Manages to pull off the delicate balance between action and comedy and holds up surprisingly well despite the completely altered geopolitical landscape. Some of the minor characters are actually more entertaining than Edwards and Fiorentino, Alex Rocco as Jonathan's stressed out father and his more permissive wife, played by Marla Adams. Rosario, the English-language challenged maid, and the punk rock trio (we love it...), and of course the persistent Vlad, played convincingly by German film and TV veteran Klaus Loewitsch. Of course, some things seem very odd, especially looking at it from a post-9/11 point-of-view. For example, it's hard to imagine college kids roaming the campus with guns, even if they are paintball guns, without anyone so much as batting an eye. Noneless, it's easy to suspend disbelief for a couple of hours to enjoy this fun film.
It's got action, it's got sex, it's got humor, and most of all, it's got a college kid who seems to be able to outsmart highly trained German spies. Everyone loves it when a complete loser, virgin college guy gets duped by his spy girlfriend to be the patsy for a large coup involving other spies, CIA, and the FBI. And what better way to show Anthony Edwards beat all of these people than with a mere animal tranquilizer gun. See it, if just for the "Yes, I am a weergin" line.
Gotcha is a hopelessly shallow film, serving up a good deal of hokum in the ridiculous plot. It's a contrived idea to start with, and the script goes through predictable twist after twist until the inevitable conclusion.
