The pandemic has laid waste to independent cinemas across the UK, with releases delayed and audiences vanishing. Now lockdown is over, here are 11 classic venues that are worth your support

Electric Cinema, Birmingham
First opening its doors in 1909, the Electric is the oldest working cinema in the UK. A Midlands cultural landmark, the Electric is known for its Shock and Gore horror film festival, supporting the works of local student film-makers and its Sundays devoted to screening classics. Its doors have remained closed since last March and show no signs of reopening. If you happen to walk past you’ll still see the posters up from the last screenings of March 2020.
Duke of York, Brighton
A beautiful Grade II-listed building, the Duke of York is owned by Cineworld, like the rest of the Picturehouse chain. Previously voted the best cinema in the UK, it opened in the autumn of 1910 and has remained largely unchanged in the century since. As such, the costs of maintaining the cinema are high and while it has reopened, Cineworld has yet to guarantee its future.
Savoy theatre, Monmouth
Part of the appeal of the Savoy is that it has barely changed since 1928 when it first became a cinema after brief lives as a roller skating rink, corn exchange and traditional theatre. But the oldest cinema in Wales has had a difficult time as any. When restrictions were lifted last summer there simply were not enough films to show to make it financially viable. To survive through the winter, it received a £10,000 grant from Film Hub Wales and furloughed all but one member of staff.
Phoenix Cinema, London
The Phoenix has survived the Spanish flu, the Luftwaffe and several close brushes with insolvency in its 109-year history, but it would not have overcome the pandemic without a six-figure grant from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund. The Phoenix, which does lots of community events with an emphasis on education and children, has also been running a continuous fundraiser – because in the world of independent cinema, every penny counts.

Curzon, Clevedon
Opening in 1912, the Somerset venue’s first event acted as a benefit for families of victims who perished on the Titanic. The Curzon operates as a registered charity and relies entirely on custom and donations to stay open, meaning there was no private investment to serve as backup after Covid-19 forced its closure. Social distancing regulations have since prevented it from getting enough customers to cover costs. A reopening this spring was only possible due to a grant from the BFI.
Campbeltown Picture House, Campbeltown
Just four years ago, the Argyll and Bute cinema, which originally opened in 1913, received millions to fully restore its century-old building. The restoration kept the art nouveau style while making it more commercially viable by adding an extra screen and cafe. But pushed to the brink by the pandemic, the Picture House would have faced permanent closure without a share of the Scottish government’s £3.55m Independent Cinema Recovery and Resilience Fund.
Rio Cinema, London
The Rio has been situated on Kingsland High Street in Dalston since 1909 and had only just undergone an expansion into its previously unused basement. As with most independent cinemas in the UK, the Rio has had its finances devastated by the pandemic; there has been a battle over the future of the cinema between the board and an online group called Save the Rio, who are attempting to block a sale to a corporate chain. However following the appointment of a new board and a grant from the BFI, the Rio has been able to reopen.

The Strand, Belfast
The last cinema in Northern Ireland to retain art deco ornamentation, the Strand in east Belfast is now into its 86th year of existence. A bedrock of its community, where a significant proportion of customers walk to the venue, the Strand has survived through lockdown because of funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s stability and renewal programme, though social distancing rules continue to threaten the cinema’s financial sustainability. (This caption was amended on 22 June 2021. An earlier version wrongly claimed the Strand did not qualify for ACNI funding.)
Regent Street Cinema, London
The first UK venue to play a motion picture in 1896, Regent Street’s place in history may be guaranteed but its future is not. In a building owned by the University of Westminster, it reopened in 2015 after being out of action since 1980. It has made use of the government’s furlough scheme, allowing it to reopen, but it may not survive the ongoing volatility around the entertainment industry.
Leiston Film theatre, Leiston
The first cinema in Suffolk, it opened in 1914 and is a fine example of Victorian-era design, and currently has a single large screen. To try to stay afloat during lockdown, the cinema organised a drive-in event that screened Back to the Future to raise money for the historic business while customers couldn’t walk through the door.
Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds
One of the few cinemas left in the UK with an outside box office, the Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds is a treat for the eyes and has lived in its unique corner spot since 1914. It is also the UK’s only remaining gaslit cinema. In response to the enforced closure last spring, the owners of the cinema set up a fund to support the theatre’s survival. However, in more positive news, the cinema has received a grant to ensure its survival.
