Following a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.
Paranormal researcher Abby Yates and physicist Erin Gilbert are trying to prove that ghosts exist in modern society. When strange apparitions appear in Manhattan, Gilbert and Yates turn to engineer Jillian Holtzmann for help. Also joining the team is Patty Tolan, a lifelong New Yorker who knows the city inside and out. Armed with proton packs and plenty of attitude, the four women prepare for an epic battle as more than 1,000 mischievous ghouls descend on Times Square.
I think this is best described as a remake. It varies from the original in quite a few ways while keeping with the original concept.

The main characters are a bit different, the plot is a little different, and the results may vary. It's different enough to entertain people that already watched the original while allowing the general concept to be translated to a more "modern" audience.

I would like to point out that many of the complaints I have read in reviews point to particular details that mirrored the first film, and seemed along with cameo appearances to remind viewers of the original film while staying true to it with a completely new story.

I'm intentionally being vague here, but most of us know what Ghostbusters was (bordering on the offensive). If why things in this film seem so true to the first isn't clear to you, maybe you should go back and watch it with fresh modern eyes. Ghostbusters (the original) was made as a wild comedy. While not liking everything done or the way it was done I personally think this modern remake was rather amusing and stayed true to the spirit of the original.

Without giving it a top rating, I definitely think it deserves more credit than I've seen in reviews. The most shocking part was how much I liked it in spite of so many people writing hateful reviews. While in no way approaching the brilliance of the original it's definitely a lot better than you would expect after reading so many bad reviews. In so many ways it seemed like a brilliant parallel story.

If I could point out just one serious flaw...characters. The original had Dana who was a serious musician and a likable character. Spengler from the original was a serious (yet possibly wacky) scientist with a sort of dry humor. Without any reliable characters to latch onto maybe it was harder for people to "get it". The intended parallel nature was obvious, but in the sense of characters things just seemed a bit scrambled.
It was pretty much clear after the first trailer that we were not getting a belated sequel to a beloved classic and a flawed but still passable second movie in a series. Consequently, when I went to see this movie I tried to not overburden it with expectations but rather judge it as a work of filmmaking in its own right made in a new age for a generation of movie goers who grew up with very different movies. So my point of view was not to see if it held its own when compared to the Ghostbusters of 1984 but rather if it was a good movie compared to some of the newer effects-driven movies. Would I recommend this to someone who liked "Guardians of the Galaxy"?

1. Equipment and special effects/CGI

Probably the first disappointment was that the equipment did not look like actual pieces of engineering. They were obvious movie props which fit in nicely with the CGI effects which belong more in some Ghostbusters theme park than a movie. Modern effects can create new visual worlds. This movie created nothing like it. It was a constant series of immersion breakers. Some of it was done right but the overall performance of the CGI team was sub-par compared to modern standards in filmmaking.

2. Acting

I know that these people are talented. I've seen them nail parts in comedies which were funny as hell and surprisingly layered but there was little of it in this movie. The characters were one-dimensional and never developed any team dynamic and that was to a certain degree caused by bad acting. Not a single role convinced me that I was actually watching human beings in a difficult situation. I always was painfully aware that I was watching actors who struggled with their source material which leads me right to the next point:

3.Writing

Plot holes as big as the Grand Canyon, failed pacing and lame sometimes cringe-worthy jokes. The backstories were bad or non-existent which made the characters amble about devoid of any emotional connection to the audience.

4. The men vs. women "sexism problem"

I actually asked a female friend to watch it with me because of it and she actually found a bit more merit in the movie than I did because she thought it nice to be able to relate to an all female main cast but she agreed that the movie was deeply flawed in many ways. She said that it was a wasted opportunity to show women as equals in a competitive and difficult environment because the writing team portrayed men as either stupid dolts or plain evil villains. It belittled their efforts somewhat because the writing team took the easy way out and made them look good by putting them up against weak opponents.

5. Verdict

It's an uninspired and flawed attempt at rebooting a franchise. For the most part it's just not entertaining enough by any standard old or new in filmmaking. And no, it's not the worst movie of all time as some people will want you to believe and some of the comments here are filled with unnecessary vitriol but even a neutral or well-meaning individual cannot overlook the many problems which turn this into a bad movie.
There is an easy camaraderie and chemistry among the central quartet, a harmony that continues when Chris Hemsworth, charmingly stupid, enters as the phantom-vanquishing squad's receptionist. Yet the main performers rarely get to display their individual idiosyncratic strengths.
