Future of PayPal Mobile Payments for USA in UK?

I like this solution. As described in his video "Fast, Easy, Safe and Simple". PayPal's blog announced in May 2012 that the "Pay InStore" app would be available for use at Oasis and other major retail brands. The app is available on iPhone or Android devices and allows customers to pay via PayPal. This application allows retailers to leverage existing infrastructure to add mobile payments. If we compare square vs paypal than we will be in better position to choose the best payment gateway for our online ecommerce store.

PayPal UK's Pay InStore app can be used in one of three ways:

1) Close the mobile phone using the iPad.

2) Scan the barcode from the app.

3) Enter the number directly under the barcode in the payment terminal.

The Pay InStore app can also be used to retrieve offers collected online and transfer them to the mobile app. PayPal users can also sign up for special offers and redeem through the app. To quote from the PayPal video: "The app works with or without a signal." in the same way. That is great!

UK in-store checkout and PayPal, like its sister app in the US, allow users to pay without using their mobile phone. US users enter their mobile number + PIN to make payments, while UK users enter their user or transaction ID. Correct me if I'm wrong, but POS integration will be required to accept these transactions. Payment terminals are programmed or set to accept only a certain set of gift card numbers. Each gift card provider is authenticated at each terminal, but the acquirer can program the merchant's terminals to only allow transactions through partner processors. It does not make sense for users to manually enter a virtual card number that is a credit card as it opens the door to PCI non-compliance.

PayPal's UK checkout, unlike the US, allows merchants to scan barcodes to enable mobile payments. It looks like the POS register will need to be set up to scan a 1D barcode as a gift card. If the merchant has access or the ability to configure their POS software to make this modification, it can be done fairly easily. It gets more complicated from there. Every POS software has a gift card port, and some are tied to a single processor or solution.

If the processor works with PayPal, they will be able to route the transaction through PayPal for approval. It is certainly possible due to their recent partnership with Discover that PayPal transactions can move to the Discover bar where the processor routes the transaction as a credit card transaction. If so, the transfer through Discover will still require the processor to convert the transaction from a non-cash or gift card transaction to a finance, credit or debit transaction. Due to the old system, this may be unnecessary or not the easiest step.

Processors such as Mercury, Pepros and MerchantLink can have a big advantage here by leveraging existing relationships with point-of-sale suppliers. First Data, TSYS, Global, ChasePaymentech and Vantiv (No. 5) could also play a big role in the here and now if they choose to. Finally, the transaction will be forwarded to PayPal for actual authorization using the payment method selected by the user and added to the digital wallet. While PayPal may offer a preview of the future of mobile payments in the UK and abroad, it still needs some sales and processor integration. Can PayPal really work directly with point of sale vendors like Micro and NCR to have a direct relationship with PayPal?

It is by no means impossible, and it means a lot to them. By cutting out the magic, they build their own payment network with each direct connection to PayPal. Although I'm sure most processors will be smart to work with PayPal to take advantage of the 100+ million PayPal users that PayPal might want to funnel through their portal. It seems to be the way to go, and it's a win-win, the third "win" PayPal connects merchants with its users. If the processors decide not to work with PayPal, I'm sure PayPal, if they haven't already given the ability for merchants to connect their software directly to the PayPal API, will let them know. It will be done very soon.
