Two alchemist brothers go on a quest for the Philosopher's Stone after an attempt to revive their dead mother goes horribly wrong.
The plot takes place at the beginning of the 20th century, in a reality where alchemy is real, extremely developed and respected. The plot features brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric who, after attempting the forbidden technique of human transmutation, suffer the consequences. Alphonse loses his entire body while Edward loses his left leg. Edward then sacrifices his right arm to save his brother's soul by attaching it to a metal suit of armor. Edward is then given mechanical prosthetics known as "automail" in place of his missing arm and leg. Upon acceptance into the State Alchemists, he is given the nickname "Fullmetal Alchemist", all while searching with Alphonse for the legendary philosopher's stone, that will repair their bodies.
Then I scrolled through the reviews and realize the earliest critics throwing low stars were all anime fans who prefer cartoons. Personally I've never even been able to watch Pokemon for more than 5 minutes without getting a headache so I wouldn't even try to watch a Japanese cartoon with this much story line. Once this movie gets proper recognition for what it is, a movie based on comic book drawings much like the Marvel series, it will probably grow with cult like popularity. It's really good. The cinematography and CGI are fantastic and while the Japanese acting is over the top dramatic the stories good enough to make up for it. Even the stuff that came off like a scene from the CGI Scooby Doo movies somehow worked. I predict this will gain a bigger audience and appreciation now that it's on Netflix. I didn't even mind the subtitles. Best damn foreign film I've seen since The Wave. Hope there's a sequel.
If you asked someone to explain FMA in one sentence then act it out, this is what you would end up with. Al is acted more like he is an alien wearing a human skin that has'nt worked out how legs work yet. Winry is just god awful, she is acted out like a total spas for no other reason than what I assume is an attempt at cheap laughs. Alphonse is the only passable one of the trio, and that is because he has no facial expressions. They have made the exact same mistake all adaptations make, they are trying to make the human actors act like anime characters, it looks unnatural and awkward, anime works because its anime, humans do not move like they do in the drawings. They gloss over the story SO much, I can recite this anime off by heart and it is missing some very crucial emotional moments, and they are trying to jam way too much in way too fast, and like an amateur at a hotdog eating contest, it chokes hard. They think being loud and yelling makes the characters the same as the anime, it just comes off as obnoxious and cringe-worthy, and Winry is the far and away example of this, she is a terrible actress and has been directed totally wrong for the character. Do yourself a favor, watch the original anime, even the brotherhood collection as well, and feel the true emotional and physical journey Ed and Al go on to get their bodies back, it will take longer than 2 hours for sure, but I promise you will fall in love with it.
Characters come and go quickly, leaving a feeling that there is too much compression of the multi-episode story.
