Two alchemist brothers go on a quest for the Philosopher's Stone after an attempt to revive their dead mother goes horribly wrong.
The plot takes place at the beginning of the 20th century, in a reality where alchemy is real, extremely developed and respected. The plot features brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric who, after attempting the forbidden technique of human transmutation, suffer the consequences. Alphonse loses his entire body while Edward loses his left leg. Edward then sacrifices his right arm to save his brother's soul by attaching it to a metal suit of armor. Edward is then given mechanical prosthetics known as "automail" in place of his missing arm and leg. Upon acceptance into the State Alchemists, he is given the nickname "Fullmetal Alchemist", all while searching with Alphonse for the legendary philosopher's stone, that will repair their bodies.
This movie is a visual experience of different styles.The power of this movie is definitely in its visual style and overall style of directing. The movie uses different themes throughout the movie but yet the movie manages to create one big unique identity. The movie never feels incoherent or disjointed in its style or storytelling, though it all widely differs from each other at times.
I had really, really low expectations for the movie; the movie somehow defied them. It took all the elements that made the manga/anime so good, and turned them into pure shit. Major characters that added dimensions to the show were removed (Scar, Izumi, King Bradley). The best part about FMAB was the character development &amp; the intricacy of the plot, both of which are nowhere to be found.<br/><br/>The casting/acting was definitely suboptimal; movie is supposed to be about turn of the century England during industrial revolution. I didn&#39;t get any feel for that, instead you have blonde Asian dude running around. Felt more like a 30 year old guy trying to act like he&#39;s a teenager, came off as being super cringe. And Winry character&#39;s acting was SO bad, I almost puked. And Roy Mustang looks like an otaku doing a cosplay as opposed to a soldier. <br/><br/>Actually the entire cast looked like they were doing cosplay competition in some fake Japan town made for &#39;culture experience&#39; of European architecture. <br/><br/>The CGI was cringe as hell as well.... they almost felt 90s level, did they not have budget to go top of the line?
Instances of alchemy abound in the narrative — walls are converted into projectiles, brick courtyards into hungry beasts — but the same magic can’t improve soap opera-like theatrics, the overuse of expositional dialogue or an eagerness to flit between action scenes.
