PLANET FITNESS TO OPEN ITS DOORS TO TEENS FOR FREE ALL SUMMER LONG
‘Teen Summer Challenge’ Program Invites Teenagers Ages 15 – 18 to Work Out for Free in all of its 1,700+ locations nationwide from May 15 – September 1
New Research Finds 91 Percent of Teens Want to Stay Active Over the Summer, Believe Exercise Positively Impacts Mental Health, Focus and Schoolwork
HAMPTON, N.H. (April 26, 2019) – Planet Fitness, Inc., one of the largest and fastest-growing franchisors and operators of fitness centers in the U.S. and home of the Judgement Free Zone®, is inviting high school teenagers ages 15 – 18* to work out for free at any of its more than 1,700 Planet Fitness locations throughout the United States from May 15 through September 1 as part of the nationwide Teen Summer Challenge initiative. Free fitness classes specifically for teenagers will also be available Monday through Friday via certified fitness trainers.
Additionally, all teens who sign up beginning May 15 are automatically entered into Planet Fitness’ Scholarship Sweepstakes. By the end of summer, 51 lucky teens across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., will be randomly selected to receive a $500 scholarship, and one teen will receive a $5,000 grand prize**. Teens will also have the chance to win exciting prizes on Planet Fitness’ Twitter and Instagram channels throughout the summer, such as club swag, movie tickets and wireless headphones.***
The nationwide launch of the Teen Summer Challenge builds on a successful local program first launched last summer in New Hampshire, Planet Fitness’ home state. To sign-up, visit a Planet Fitness near you beginning May 15. Teens under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at sign-up.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recently released new physical activity guidelines****, which revealed that 80 percent of Americans do not currently meet the recommended amount of physical activity. The guidelines also challenge youth (ages 6 – 17) to pursue a minimum of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Planet Fitness’ Teen Summer Challenge offers a solution for teenagers eager for an opportunity to stay active during the summer when school sports programs, gym classes or after school activities wind down.
“Teens today are under ever-increasing pressure to succeed academically and socially, battle a growing list of responsibilities both inside and outside of the classroom and become well-rounded members of their community,” said Chris Rondeau, Chief Executive Officer at Planet Fitness. “At Planet Fitness, a healthy and active lifestyle should never be a challenge – which is why we’re flipping that notion on its head with the launch of the nationwide Teen Summer Challenge. We want to give teens across the United States the chance to stay active when school is out – a time when they may not otherwise have access to organized fitness or athletic programs, which is why we’re offering a safe space to exercise for free and spend time with their friends all summer long.”
To uncover how teens ages 15 – 18 view health and fitness today, Planet Fitness commissioned a national study***** that sheds light on how teens and parents feel about health and wellness, and how best to motivate youth toward pursuing an active lifestyle and setting them up for success through adulthood. Key findings include:
In addition to opening its doors to all teens ages 15 – 18 all summer long, Planet Fitness also offers extremely low prices and a variety of benefits, including a hassle-free environment, brand name cardio and strength equipment, fully equipped locker rooms, flat screen televisions and much more.
For more information on the Teen Summer Challenge, including how to sign up for the free membership at any of the more than 1,700 Planet Fitness locations nationwide, visit PlanetFitness.com/TeenSummerChallenge.
*Teenagers ages 15 – 18 can visit any Planet Fitness location in the United States. Teens must work out at the location they sign up at and are not permitted to use other locations. Online signups are not available. Teens under 18 must bring a parent or guardian to sign up. Once the parent or guardian waiver is signed for teens under 18, teens can workout alone. Students who are already 18 do not need a parent or guardian to be present during the sign-up process.

Teach your teen the basics of financial responsibility.
Start your child on the right financial path by teaching smart money management. Our free checking account is an ideal place to begin - it's a joint bank account for both you and your teen.
Learn more about how to open an account with our checklist. Note: Existing Early Saver members can open a teen checking account online through the teen's Online Banking.
At BECU, we believe in financial health. We also believe in keeping things simple. How do we do that? After your teen turns 18, their Early Saver savings account automatically converts into a standard BECU savings account, while their checking account remains a standard BECU checking account. You can either remain a joint account holder on the savings and checking account (helpful for parental deposits), or your teen can choose to convert the checking and savings accounts into independent accounts. As an "adult" account, they enjoy all the benefits of full-fledged BECU members:
BECU checking accounts are not age restrictive, so you can help your teen open a checking account at any age. As a reminder, a parent or guardian must be a joint account holder until the teenager turns 18.
Teen: Bring the following - Social Security card, driver's permit or license
Parent or guardian with current BECU account: state-issued driver's license or ID card
Parent or guardian without a BECU account: Social Security number, photo ID, email address and street address
It is possible to open a joint account online if your teen has an existing Early Saver account and active Online Banking (if they're at least 13), but we've found it's helpful for both teen and parent to apply in person so we can answer any questions either of you might have. Teens can also get a debit card printed on the spot when they open their accounts in person.
Yes! A BECU teen checking account has access to both Online Banking2 and the BECU Mobile App2 at the age of 13. (Due to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule [COPPA], these features are unavailable in Early Saver accounts for members under the age of 13.)
Parents have the ability to transfer funds in/out of the accounts, deactivate debit cards and remove features such as Courtesy Pay. Both the adult and the teen also have individual access logins for Online Banking, and each will have access to set up account alerts. Alerts can be set up to let one or both receive text messages when an account balance is low or has reached zero.
Yes! Teens can securely pay retailers using their digital wallet app on iPhone, Android and Samsung devices.
After your teen turns 18, their Early Saver savings account will automatically convert into a standard BECU savings account and enjoy the same benefits of adult BECU members. Their checking account will remain a standard BECU checking account. You can either remain a joint on the savings and checking account, or your teen can choose to convert the checking and savings accounts to independent accounts.
