An American master chemist plans to score big on a once in a lifetime drug deal. All does not go as planned and he is soon entangled in a web of deceit.
Elmo McElroy is a streetwise American master chemist who heads to England to sell his special new formula - a powerful, blue concoction guaranteed to take you to 'the 51st state.' McElroy's new product delivers a feeling 51 times more powerful than any thrill, any pleasure, any high in history. But his plans for a quick, profitable score go comically awry when he gets stuck in Liverpool with an unlikely escort and his ex-girlfriend and becomes entangled in a bizarre web of double-dealing and double-crosses.
Elmo McElroy (Samuel Jackson) is a kilt wearing chemist who after seeing his diploma go up in smoke back in the '70's, invents a powerful new drug which he plans to sell in England. But 'the Lizard' (Meatloaf) a crime figure that he burned on a deal, sends a hit-woman after him. From there the plot goes on to encompass a shady escort (Robert Carlyle), his girlfriend, skinheads, soccer, among other things. I only saw this because Ronny Yu was involved, and while it was filmed nicely, the script was left lacking. The acting surprisingly stale and he jokes just weren't funny, curse words peppered throughout seek to remedy this, but all the F words in the world can't turn Shiite into shinola.

My Grade: D

DVD Extras: Both Widescreen and Fullscreen versions; Cinemax Special: The Making Of Formula 51; Theatrical trailer; and trailers for: "xXx", "Bad Boys", "Half Past Dead" & "Snatch"
In between the conflicting influences of the over-the-top over-budgeted blockbuster and the "let's just do some cool stunts and forget the plot" school (which produced such tripe as "The Transporter" and "Kiss of the Dragon"), we now see a rare gem of a film from director Ronny Yu. Starring Samuel L. Jackson as a master drug chemist intent on making a clean break from his life of crime with one final deal, and Robert Carlyle as the Liverpool-supporting thug for hire who helps him set that deal up, this movie is witty, finely paced, and well scripted. It flows with a style reminiscent of Guy Ritchie's work (see "Snatch" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels"), and never takes itself too seriously.

The two stars are supported by a talented pool of actors including Rhys Ifans, Emily Mortimer and Meat Loaf, who all deliver fine performances. The story line is neat, the twist in the tale finely crafted, and the soundtrack well-selected. Nobody's going to be winning academy awards from this one, but it's great entertainment for all that.

See it - as Robert Carlyle's character would say, "It's the dog's b*llocks."
An execrable mess that leaves no genre cliché unturned or human body or soul untrammeled.
