Chennai,Oct 1: It is surprising to notice the increasing number of transgenders involved in sex work in a society that considers them as ‘untouchables’. The changing fantasies of the customers and the struggle for a livelihood, have forced the members of the third gender to enter sex work.Thus transgenders who practise sex work are increasingly seen in various hotels and secluded areas of Chennai.
“Sex workers from our community are in demand these days. I can’t see anything wrong in selling our flesh if it is a question of our stomach. You are reluctant to provide us decent jobs and shelter. In this profession we earn an average of 650 rupees per day”, Nalini, a transgender sex worker said. Some of the major pick up points are in Nungambakkam, behind the Indira Nagar railway station and in T- Nagar. “Very often we are physically abused by men for various reasons. Most of them bargain and fight for discounts after sexual encounter. This makes us violent but they end up running away and people think we are chasing them for money.” On condition of anonymity, a transgender revealed.
Many pedestrians and travellers claim to see transgenders waiting in public spaces in search of customers. “I am a student who crosses the Indra nagar railway station almost everyday. I have seen transgenders waiting for their customers under the rail line by 9 in the night. Often in Taramani, they beat up men, but the public hardly interferes” said a student from Asian College of Jounalism. But the night patrolling team’s observations were contradictory.“The area is not safe for women to hang around at night. But there are hardly any transgender sex workers whom we have spotted in this particular area” , said a police officer from the night patrolling team on Taramani road.
According to the Indian Community Welfare Organization (ICWO), studies show that there are more than 11000 females and 9000 men involved in the flesh trade in Chennai. But the number of transgender sex workers remains unknown as their business is more secretive. They said that the reason for the increasing number of transgender sex worker is the lack of education and ignorance. They mostly are ostracised from their families and ultimately end up belonging to a group of ‘Aravanis’ who beg or engage in flesh trade for survival.
