Roads to Zion is not what was expected -- yet fascinating and a good read nonetheless. Across hundreds of years, travelers from various European lands endured the long, tiring, and often dangerous journey to their homeland in the middle east. When they arrived, many wrote about their experiences, often in the form of letters back home. Extracts from letters of travelers are primarily what this book contains, and it offers a wonderful cross-section of how the journey, as well as the destination, were perceived by the various travelers across time. A poor scholar from eastern Europe in the 17th century has a vastly different experience than a cultured German two centuries later, for example.Hearing the tales from the mouths of such varied situations provides a unique and subtle insight into the situation in the middle east across history as well as the travelers expectations. Especially of interest is the publication date -- 1948, the year Israel achieved independence. In fact, many of the letters in this book speak of the miserable conditions imposed upon residents in Palestine (as Israel was then called) by the rulers of the land at the time, and the authors consistently express their wishes for independence and freedom from the brutality and oppression that they often find at the end of their long journeys.Roads to Zion is not a long read, nor a particularly gripping one, to be honest, but it is well worth the time investment! Some readers may wish to skip the longer, more detailed descriptions of minutiae aboard ship, for example, but if you choose to read it, youll understand the writer that much better.Either way, for anyone interested in Judaica or history, this is not a book to be skipped.
