Disclaimer: I received a free review copy from Endeavor Press.The title of Philip Lindsays novel of Katherine Howard, Here Comes The King initially struck me as a rather ridiculous one, like if Henry VIII had a reality TV show-(Oh, please, please someone make that show! “Jane, will accept this rose? Your fairy tale continues. Anne, you did not get a rose. Please leave the Palace and proceed to the Chopping Block.” )-but the phrase is repeated over and over by members of the court, often with awe and anxiety and reverence, showing what an impact he had on people’s lives that just the word that he was about to walk around the corner sent people into a flurry of activity to make sure everything was ready for his royal arrival.As the book continues, the phrase begins to take on an alarming double meaning. People say here come the king not just to convey the information of get ready for the party to start but also stop whatever criminal activity you are engaged in.The book starts out in the middle of things as everyone tries not to think too hard about the fact Henry VIII is celebrating the judicial murder of Thomas Cromwell with yet another wedding, doing an excellent job portraying the fact that with any story about Henry VIII and his six wives you’d have to go pretty far back to say you are at “the beginning.” Thomas Culpeper throws a temper tantrum over Henry’s marriage to Katherine Howard, exactly like, a friend points out, a child suddenly wanting an ignored toy just because someone else took it. But Thomas continues to brood and obsess over Katherine now that he can’t have her – and goes off to get drunk and sulk in the countryside. And here the book addresses the rape charge that historical fiction authors often gloss over, putting it in the context of Thomas being at a truly horrible extreme, mentally, and feeling true remorse afterwards. It still doesn’t do much for the victims, but it’s a good framing of this event by the author in that it explains but doesn’t condone his actions.Katherine and Thomas both want what they cant have – and come off as extremely self-centered people. And you know what? Maybe they were. Maybe the real Katherine and Thomas were simply two people who were both narcissistic and so intent on pleasing themselves that they didn’t think big picture. As Thomas Culpeper continues on his self-destructive path, characters begin to distant themselves from him, as it becomes increasingly obvious to everyone but the king that Thomas is going to cause some sort of disaster and they do not want to be caught in the fall out. There are a few places where Lindsay sacrifices a smooth narrative in order to try and make the story adhere strictly to the known historical facts. It’s a tricky balancing act in the genre of historical fiction to have both the history and story run smoothly together, and here it wobbles a few times, especially when working in known documents.As Katherine and Thomas go about their reckless love affair, everyone looks on with either suspicion or horror. And then, Francis Dereham turns up, and Lindsay’s interpretation of events gets… creative.Here, Dereham is a gallant gentleman who wants to protect Katherine, and, if needs be, die for her. Wow. Just… wow.Events hurtle onwards as Thomas and Katherine get increasingly more brazen, pulling more and more people into their crazy Vortex of Doom, with everyone trying to bail as fast as they can. Henry VIII’s royal jester Will Sommers gets a fairly major role, which is nice to see him as a real character and not just a part of the setting. He genuinely cares for people and uses his status and powers of observation to stay to the side of all the factions and make some pointed commentary that he hopes will help rather than hurt. He also wishes rather hard that he could have just been a monk and tucked away into a quiet corner somewhere rather than being in the middle of the firestorm known as Henry VIII’s court. I felt for the man. Meanwhile, Thomas Cramer also gets an expanded role slightly larger than his usual one in Katherine Howard’s story of “passing notes.” Here we see him with the Light of Revelation Burning in His Eyes and he is slightly terrifying, even as he sobs about what a coward he is. I normally have a lot of sympathy for Thomas Cramner – but here Lindsay had me ready to start booing and throwing rotten cabbage.The tension rackets up to almost unbearable levels as everyone waits for the inevitable to break, and history soon makes its way to the tragic finish.
