This collection was originally published in the 19th century, and covers travellers accounts of Scotland from the late 13th to the late 17th centuries. Its obvious that the compiler put in a lot of research work, but it must be said that the accounts are of variable quality. Some are little more than topographical descriptions, and whilst some of the English writers are fair minded others are so prejudiced against Scotland as to make their observations worthless. For the period in question a certain amount of hostility from the English is to be expected, but when a writer includes a sentence like The people are proud, arrogant, vainglorious boasters, bloody, barbarous and inhuman butchers you know that particular author is not exactly unbiased.Most of the travellers featured are French or English, and almost all remark on the poverty stricken condition of the population. At the time both those countries were much wealthier than Scotland, and the compiler notes in his introduction that it would have been interesting to have had accounts from travellers from places like Ireland or Scandinavia, where economic conditions were much closer to those in Scotland. Alas these are not to be found. It is also noticeable that the descriptions, especially the early ones, concentrate very much on the east of the country, though Glasgow and the south west begin to feature in some of the later accounts. The Highlands hardly feature at all, except that a number of the authors mention in passing that parts of Scotland are inhabited by savages.There are 24 different accounts in total, of which I think the best are from the Frenchman Jean Froissart, the Italian Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini (who later became Pope Pius II), the Spanish diplomat Don Pedro de Ayala, and the Englishman Thomas Morer. These accounts, and a few others, are entertaining and informative, and make the book worth dipping into. A mixed bag.
