Sally Salisbury was a high-class eighteenth-century London prostitute, and an extremely famous one – cheap prints of her portrait could be bought all over town, penny-ballads detailing her exploits were flogged on every street corner, and the emerging newspaper and gossip-rag trade followed her intrigues avidly. Along with notable colleagues such as Kitty Fisher, she represented the very new phenomenon of the celebrity courtesan, made possible by relaxed censorship laws and changing ideas about sex. Everyone knew her, and to pretend otherwise was a way of saying that you were too high-minded for such concerns – just as someone today might say, вЂAnd who is this Kim Kardashian of which you speak?’I have no idea who Captain Charles Walker was, but he writes Sallys memoirs in the jovial, brandy-and-cigars style of a man of the world defending his subject from ungallant attacks on her character. He begins by summarising her childhood in Shropshire, and briefly touching on how she came to London and became apprenticed, as it were, to Mrs Wisebourne, Londons most famous madam (who I think Im right in saying was actually listed as a tourist attraction in one early London guidebook). What follows is a series of sketches about her adventures, in which Sally Salisbury emerges as a quasi-legendary figure, like a sort of trickster goddess from some native mythology. Her defining characteristics are physical beauty, blindingly fast repartee, quick thinking, along with greed and selfishness.The bulk of the book is made up of letters allegedly received by the author from correspondents who have anecdotes to relate about their encounters with Sally. Almost all of them end with her getting the better of them, either by taking them for every groat theyve got, or by humiliating them socially, or both. Syphilis is usually involved somewhere too. Presumably the letters are a literary device, since the prose style is the same throughout; and presumably, too, we have to take all of this with a huge pinch of salt if we actually want to find out anything about the real life of the real woman hidden behind all this gentlemans-club bantering.I am indebted to this book for two points of vocabulary. The first is green gown, alluding to a womans loss of virginity; as in, вЂWho gave you your green gown?’ – the image is of a dress thats been stained from a roll in the grass. The other is the term old hat, which originally meant (in the OEDs words) вЂThe vulva. Also: sexual intercourse; a woman regarded as a means of sexual gratification.’ If I ever knew this, I had forgotten it. Its not known where this unflattering use came from, although Groses Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue cheekily suggests вЂbecause frequently felt’.Anyway, the book in question is full of incident along similar lines, much of it eyebrow-raising. In this passage, she has been leading on a clergyman who is under the mistaken impression that she earns a considerable income from land holdings. She disabuses him in the following way:SALLY, who began to be tird with her Canonisd Suitor, drew up the Curtain, alias her Hoop-Petticoat, &c. and clapping her Hand upon Madge, said, Ecce Signum, Doctor. This is my only Support, and I hope will continue so to my Lifes End.It is hard to know how a modern enlightened reader should view this book. On the surface it looks like an early example of a sex worker being treated with some respect, and Sally herself is undoubtedly the hero of the story; but on the other hand there is often a nasty suspicion that the laughter here is at her expense. Im not sure where I stand on it all, but its an absolutely fascinating read for anyone interested in the period or the subject matter.
