The Juice Box Bully by Bob Sornson and Maria Dismondy is a book that, in my opinion, every teacher should read to their class. This story is a tale of a new student, named Pete who has a hard time fitting in because he is a bully. Although this story is somewhat overly didactic, it conveys a great message; one which is made extremely clear so younger readers will be able to easily understand the moral as well. The purpose of this book is to teach children how to approach and react to bullies in a positive way, and it does so by making good use of the characters. The thing I enjoyed the most about this book were in fact the characters. What stuck out the most to me was how the main characters were used skillfully to ensure that the message was presented in the right way. I believe that is what makes this book stick out from all the rest. The three main characters of the story are: Ralph, Pete and Ruby. As I have already mentioned, Pete is the new bully at school, Ruby is the classmate who is unfortunately picked on by Pete, and Ralph is the mature classmate who intervenes when the two have a dispute. With that being said, I feel like each character does a great job of representing the different kinds of students who find themselves in these types of situations.Above all, I feel as though Ruby is the most relatable character, for she is the one who becomes victimized by the bully, Pete. After getting grape juice squirted on her shirt by Pete, Ruby becomes angry, and as the reader you empathize with her because more often than not, the reader has gone through a similar experience at some point in their lifetime. Although Ruby has every right to be angry with the bully, her friend Ralph eventually steps in to remind Ruby to not let her anger get the best of her and make her into a bully as well. In addition to calming Ruby down, Ralph also sticks up for Pete as Ruby tries to take her anger out on him. After settling the conflict between his two classmates, Pete thanks Ralph for sticking up for him and admits that the reason he is a bully is because he was once a victim of bullying himself. In the end, Ralph, Ruby and Pete all walk into the classroom together as friends.Overall, I rated this book four out of five stars because although I really enjoyed the overall message and I feel as though the way it was portrayed was fantastic, I did not connect so much with the illustrations, which are also a key element in stories. As the reader, they didnt stick out to me, and I feel as though if done differently, they could have added even more emotion to the book. All in all, this is a great read for kids of all ages as we see bullying becoming more of an issue both inside and outside of the classroom. This book has a great message that shows strong character development throughout the tale with a heavy amount of dialogue to show the importance of the interaction between the three main characters. The dialogue and character development in this story truly is what makes the book a great read.
