Pretty disappointing. I really liked the concept the author had for the book – an attractive lady of quality who is trapped by horrid relatives, and a self-made, soldier-type hero who eliminates the competition for her hand and “rescues” her. But it just didn’t work. The story felt like a very rough draft, with people and dialogue on the extreme end of the spectrum. Multiple attempted rapes, evil characters with no redeeming qualities. The heroine has a sister that was in… one scene? The heroine is in one of the worst possible situations you can imagine, but it’s very hard to feel sorry for her – she acts like a petulant child, and this is particularly true at the end. The only thing holding the heroine back from being with the hero is that she doesn’t understand her “womanly feelings.” Despite this, the book is very political in a way – it takes a heavy handed approach to pointing out that women were restricted in regency times. It does this by very literally comparing their station in life to slavery, over and over and over again. To make things weirder, there seems to be this underlying attraction between almost every character in the book. An old lady playing matchmaker thinks about how she wishes she could marry for the fifth time, with the hero of the story… The heroine mentally describes one of her half-brothers as very handsome (not in a normal way), and both of her half-brothers seem very aware of her own beauty. I think with heavy editing this could have been a pretty good story, but as it stands…
