Look: between my hatred of the Merriam-Webster and my absolute condemnation of everything that is the absolutely god damn abhorrent New Living Translation of the Bible probably fit to come off as a some prescriptive, elitist douchebag, but I have probably even less qualms with a supposed democratic dictionary than I do with a plain English Bible.That being said, the liberal amendments to Websters unabridged have descended to such levels of hapless and cynical memery that the entire enterprise and its mission become immediately suspect, and its an attitude that has begun dragging the entire profession of lexicography down with it. In fact, Id go so far as to posit that the OED is going out print in large part because it cant keep up (though it did finally accept YOLO, two years after Webster had already jumped upon it). The Webster Unabridged is expanding at an unprecedented rate to gobble whatever topical online acronyms it can, because this is the only possible way anyone is going to read a Time article about dictionaries. This last year Webster admitted the gender-neutral title Mx. as an alternative to Mrs./Ms./Mr., which would be fine if it was a term that was actually in the lexicon - except that it isnt, which kind of defeats the purpose of a dictionary as a reflection of, you know, popular f*cking usage. Its not that these sorts of words dont belong in the dictionary, as being terms in popular use they do (well, Mx. literally does not belong in a dictionary as, as of now, nobody actually uses it to any significant degree - whenever the actual usage begins to openly express what the substituted noun will be for the agender case, well see ourselves, and may very well not end up being Mx. [which, through ease of articulation, would just becomes miss anyway]), its that it poses a major editorial concern. Who, exactly, is editing a dictionary that admits over two thousand words a year (and counting, exponentially)? It also ignores the much more substantial (and much more interesting) question over whether or not internet slang constitutes its own dialect that requites its own democratic regulating body, which, respectively: it does and, frankly, already has.
