The Author believes that writing was Mesopotamia’s greatest gift to the world and its most influential effect on the region. It talks about schools and how they were been linked to temples, palaces and sometimes in an ordinary house in Ur. There were lovely details about teaching ways as well. The books talks about the Mesopotamian religion and how they had many gods in each city, but some gods were widely worshiped all over Mesopotamia and how minor gods still important despite of everything as had been shown in the lists of Divine ceremonies guest list. The book talks about the role of temples in helping the poor and how people were happy to dedicate their sons and daughters to the temple, including high class and royal family members. There was also a certain group of priestesses who were not allowed to marry, especially in the old Babylonian reign. You can read lovely details about magic, fighting diseases and reading the future, which was considered another job in Mesopotamia not linked to priests. About kings, the book shows how they were always trying to get gods support and how they insist on their being fair and their real trials to be so, as well as their being strong and taking part in battles. As agriculture was Assyria economy cornerstone, it was difficult to take famers from their fields – thought that happened many times – thus Assyrian kings get benefit of Aramaic Bedouin tribes and form military troops from Aramaic tribes in order to use them to solve local minor problems. The book describes in lovely details the excavations in Mesopotamia done by famous travelers with lovely hints about their story, as well as details about the modern excavations by British, French, American, German, Iraqi and Danish expeditions. Then it talks about the Mesopotamian civilizations in a chronological way giving great details about the famous kings, founders of new empires, their battles, their art and literature as well as their major architectural works such as building Nimrud, Dur Sharrukin, Nineveh and finally Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon. The book seems a small one but it is full of thorough information about the Sumerian, Akkadian, Amorite, Assyrian, Aramaic, Hittite, Kassite, Elamite, Israelites, Phoenician, Egyprian, Phrygian, Medes, Hurrians, Mitanni and all other major empires. It helps you to understand the region as if you were reading a lovely story. Moreover, the book is full of photos - most of them are colored - adding more information about each subject. The book gives an idea about the political situations in the region and the obstacles faced each empire with the major causes for their fall. Finally, you can read a thorough yet short dictionary with summarized information about Dynasties, kings, ancient cities and their modern names, gods and goddesses, ancient peoples, archaeologists and archaeological societies that are all connected to the near eastern archaeology. This short list does add many new information. A lovely book and do recommend it.
