This book is an attempt to make a contribution to two areas of study which to their mutual impoverishment have been quite distinct in the literature on underdevelopment. On the one hand it is a study of the impact of colonialism and imperialism on the internal structure of a dominated economy and society, and in particular on patterns of stratification within that society. On the other hand it aims to make a contribution to the development of a Marxist theory and in particular to explore some of the central theoretical problems which arise.
