This book was sent to me by the publisher, Ave Maria Press, for reviewing. The subject is very close to my heart as I want to soak in everything written on praying the Scriptures. This book meets that, and even more! We get to not only experience God’s Word in what we read, but also through we what we see, Visio Divina. I never heard that term before but I find the author to be charmingly creative in his spiritual genius for crafting such a term. The Lord is speaking, always speaking, and this was a new concept for me as a former Muslim and you can’t limit the infinite ways for His speaking. You can stand before a tree and He is there in the burning bush speaking. What about icons? Could he still speak there? Absolutely! As He speaks, you commune with Him, and your communion is called Visio Divina. It is all too easy to limit God’s speaking to a “book” but the Word has become flesh; God is dynamic and so is His word(s). The book lays the groundwork in the first 26 pages. This makes it into a practical book rather than dense religious reading. On p. 13, he introduces us to what it means to “read” icons instead of judging them in light of modern media. We should make note of his explanation on pp. 6-8 on how to allow God’s Word transform us, actually the title of the book. As of page 27 onwards, the author offers us different passages in the gospel in the form of icons, and what beautiful inter-linking! We shall meditate on the Annunciation, Visitation, etc. and apply the commonly known principles of Lectio Divina to each one of them. This makes it such a useful book for your morning devotions or for structured meditation around the holidays and Christian seasons such as Christmas, Easter, etc. It is Lectio Divina applied to such a wealth of icons that have left their huge impact on the Church throughout history.
