Esta entrada no pretende ser un resumen exhaustivo de la obra de Joseph F. O´Callaghan, pero sí intentaré presentar los principales contenidos de la misma. Asimismo, justificaré la puntuación tan baja que le he puesto. Este libro presenta una muy completa descripción del reinado de Alfonso X en la que incluye, además, testimonios de crónicas de la época y referencias a documentos cancillerescos que ejemplifican los hechos narrados. Se divide en 17 capítulos, a los que hay que sumar una sucinta introducción en la que el autor presenta los trabajos de corte historiográfico que se han realizado tanto en el pasado como en el presente. Cada capítulo se centra en un aspecto relevante del reinado de Alfonso X: En líneas generales, los primeros tres describen cuál era la concepción del poder en este periodo, así como los organismos de poder y los personajes que los encabezaban. En el cuarto y el quinto, Joseph F. O´Callaghan se centra en radiografiar las relaciones de la monarquía con la iglesia y la nobleza, ambas muy complejas y tirantes desde el comienzo del reinado. A continuación, se muestra cómo fue el proceso de concesión de fueros, la gestión de la economía y la convivencia de cristianos, moros y judíos. En el capítulo noveno OCallaghan presenta las principales obras literarias, históricas y científicas producidas en el Scriptorium Real. A partir del capítulo décimo, se aborda una de las acciones más complejas de este reinado, derivada de la reconquista de Sevilla. A partir de la década de de 1250 y hasta bien entrados los años 1260, el rey Alfonso X tuvo como principal objetivo dejar bien repoblada la zona de Sevilla, así como ampliar el territorio cristiano, hasta llegar a luchar en el norte de África, donde no consiguió sino una derrota que aumentó aún más la pobreza de algunos territorios cristianos. A este fracaso hay que sumar la imposibilidad de conseguir el título de Emperador. Los últimos capítulos presentan el final de un reinado, marcado por la revuelta de nobles y la crisis sucesoria, problemas que no fueron resueltos hasta momentos previos a la muerte de Alfonso X. Como se desprende de lo anterior, el libro me ha parecido completo, bien documentado y bien estructurado. En este sentido, le daría una valoración de 4/5. Lo que me ha parecido inasumible es encontrarme con faltas de ortografía (ausencia de tildes), erratas ortotipográficas, rupturas de diptongos por cambio de línea y cambios en la tipografía (párrafos con dos tamaños de letra). A todo esto, hay que sumar que la traducción al español muestra una sintaxis inglesa, con órdenes sintácticos a veces extraños al español. Es una vergüenza que un libro de este nivel esté tan mal traducido y editado y, además, lleve el sello de un Catedrático de Historia medieval de la Universidad de Sevilla y del Servicio de Publicaciones de esta misma Universidad.
