Book description
Its a very good, detailed, view of the Indian independence struggle (up until 1934) from someone who was a part of it. Its interesting that Bose seems to take a view of Indian history wherein Indias ancient constitution (to misappropriate a phrase from a different nations history) was destroyed by the British, and that the independence movement is in a way, a restorationist movement. It was also lovely to observe how Bose criticizes Gandhi so sweetly. Because he clearly had some kind of admiration for Gandhi (or perhaps he didnt and just wanted to keep up appearances, but I doubt that somehow) yet disagreed with him so much and thought he was so damaging to the movement. And both of those things come through very well, but *particularly* the anti-Gandhi sentiment. He views Gandhi as basically irrational. He surrenders when he has the initiative. He pushes forward when he has nothing. He gets by purely on charisma and luck. And his fuckups cost India at least 20 years of independence and a cohesive guiding ideology in its early years. Bose is emphatic about the hazard which Gandhi and his entire wing represented in its irrationalism and meekness, and I agree with him entirely on these points. The book also turned me onto an unfortunately forgotten figure of Indian and Bengali politics, Chittaranjan Das. He died too early, but he was the leader of the radical wing of Congress. If he had lived longer, or if Gandhi had died sooner, Bose predicts that India would have been free much sooner. Its also frustrating to read this and see how the congress radicals like Bose and Das just got repeatedly screwed over by the Gandhi-ite conservatives. Over and over again it seems like events conspire to screw them out of power, even when they have the support and have made the organisational investments. Very bad luck. I mean, they had some victories in compelling congress into action at a few key moments, but they ended up so powerless compared to their initial position within the party. And the one time one of their own gets into a position of power, its useless Nehru. Very disappointing and I cant imagine how annoyed Bose must have been to watch this happen repeatedly. Probably even more annoyed than I am that Bose himself was killed. Also interesting to see how active Indian nationalism was in areas like Dhaka, Barisal, Chittagong, Karachi, and Lahore. Places which became Pakistan. Of course all their urban areas were disproportionately Hindu at the time, and thus were sites of great intellectual activitiy and ideogical ferment. A shame in retrospect if you visit some of these places today. Places which tend to write this out of their histories.I also like the way in which Boses nationalism has a subtext of Hinduism to it, but yet it almost seems like the guy has never heard of Hindu Nationalism. As a result, the ethos comes across as very genuine and self-directed, rather than LARPy.Also for everyone who wants to say omg he sympathized with fascism and communism... Yes he did! And there is some good material towards the end of this which give some fairly precise outlines of what his ideal social-economic programme would have been. His modernist fascist-communist-Indian synthesis, which stands in stark contrast to Gandhis anarcho-primitivism. Pretty interesting stuff, and he goes into more detail on that subject here than in the volumes of speeches of his which Ive read.
