The book, amidst all the love scenes, is about how people actually lived. Some historical romances, even some great ones, are costume dramas or farces involving mistaken identities, misunderstandings, long lost twins . . . This is not that kind of book. If you always thought Jane Eyre would have been better with a few explicit love scenes, or always wanted to know what happened behind closed doors in Wuthering Heights, you will like this book. If you thought Jamaica Inn was really great, but always wished Joss would take a more active interest in Mary Yellen, then I think you will like this book a lot. Every author wants to write the kind of book they like to read and I like very serious romances about very smart, passionate, determined people. I hope you like them too.
