How I Came To Read This Book: I’m attempting to write a book that deals with hockey. The challenge being that, although playing hockey isn’t totally critical to the book, I need to learn about how to write about playing hockey – I figured a collection of short fiction on the topic would be helpful. The Plot: There are thirty or forty short stories (or excerpts from novels) divided into 3 general sections – awareness of / watching the game, playing the game, and being a fan of the game. The first and last sort of blurred into one another, and the playing section was the most interesting, but there is a huge array of plots, protagonists, and settings (although all centre on Canada). The Good & The Bad: The aforementioned ‘excerpts’ from novels was a downfall of this collection. I guess there isn’t as much short hockey fiction about Canada written by Canadians as the editor had thought. Anyway although some excerpts seem to come from books that are largely about hockey, others are as short as two or three pages and represent a mini-vignette from a novel that is clearly about so much more than hockey. The lack of context and cohesiveness made most of those stories a drag to read.Beyond that, many of the stories just didn’t really feel like they were about hockey. To be fair, I was reading this book looking for excerpts that would teach me about how to write about playing the game, so clearly I was drawn to the mid-section. But at the same time, there were many stories where hockey seemed to be just there, rather than intrinsically part of the story. Take for example the story of a teenaged boy on a train with his teammates who spots a former classmate he once made fun of but kind of secretly liked and wished he had apologized to, especially as his teammates take notice of her. There’s just no real connection to hockey there, sorry! There were still a few great stories, some interesting takes and facts revealed…like the fact Vancouver’s first NHL team was the Millionaires, and not the Canucks. I suspect someone with more of a working knowledge of the history of hockey and a passion for the game would enjoy this collection, but even then, I’m doubtful. I don’t regret reading it as it did give me some insight on writing about hockey, and also solidified my thoughts on some of the shortfalls of the NHL system these days, but it wasn’t particularly enthralling. The Bottom Line: Worth the read from an educational standpoint, not an entertainment one.Anything Memorable?: Nope50-Book Challenge?: Book #11 in 2010
