Like the season in question, this book was tough. At times I wasnt sure I would make it, but by the end I was glad I had.But it wasnt easy. And it should have been.On the face of it, its the re-telling of one of the great seasons at a club renowned for great seasons - and its intricate in its detail, first-hand accounts jostling for position alongside the match reports.But the book lets itself down in one crucial area. The proofreading.Its probably a product of my job, but reading sentences with spelling mistakes, duplicate words, misplaced words etc just jars. Like a badly-placed pass, it ruins the flow of the move. Like a goalkeeping error, you find yourself thinking it could have been avoided.My other niggle is the books claim that it puts Kennys first season in charge into a wider social context - it sort of does, but only as an aside, an afterthought.While the season was a rollercoaster of promises seemingly broken, only for hope to be restored the following week - so the mid 80s were a singular period for Merseyside under Thatcher, with unemployment at record levels, the Council at war with Whitehall and football fans painted as the scourge of the nation.Sadly, this - for me, anyway - isnt covered in enough depth. Choice quotes at the start of chapters (I had quite forgotten that Thatcher had been implicated in a share-dealing scheme) are not expanded upon in the body of the text, no detail is given as to how fans struggling to make ends meet were able to make so many trips across the nation. Football as an escape is all to understandable, but there was a chance here to paint a more detailed picture of the lengths fans went to, the sacrifices they surely made, just to make a midweek trip to Watford. A chance for three points missed, one feels.All that said, the book scores highly on its recounting of matches. As a boy in Essex barely pondering his teenage years, its a season that I read about but was unable to fully grasp. To have it retold in fine detail is a delight, things Id forgotten (apologies to Kevin MacDonald) brought back to life, fleshed out with stories I would never had known. And who the hell remembers the Screen Sport Super Cup?The FA Cup final is, in particular, a delight to relive - and the emotion in the final chapter is as wonderful and powerful as the day it happened.
