Tl;dr: the book is a Nichiren shu apologetic, so it turns out he was a Tendai reformer this entire time without realizing it.The book was adequate until the author attempted to discuss the post-death squabbling among Nichirens six disciples. Montgomery wanted to tell everyones side of the story as true, with the unfortunate consequence that, e.g., Nikko shirked his responsibilities by staying at Mt Minobu, as opposed to the other 5 disciples who went to their designated locations.Three paragraphs later, the author notes that Nikko was designated to reside at Mt Minobu. Whoops.The author attempts, very hard, to portray Nikko as an unpleasant and disagreeable fellow who had peculiar views, and his entire sub-sect as strange (at best). The general reasoning appears to boil down to Hey, 5/6 disciples cant be wrong, right?For anyone thinking about reading this book: Pass on this one.
