Antes había leído sólo un libro de Sarduy, Escrito en un cuerpo, pero lo había leído en ingles, y aunque las ideas que propone son de esas que te destapan los sesos, fue difícil leerlo, y uno se pierde el tono y el sabor inimitable de Sarduy. Después de leer De donde son los cantantes, creo que tendré que tener este libro en la repisa para leerlo una y otra vez. Aun ahora no lo puedo describir. Es una parodia y una alegoría de la historia de Cuba, de la cultura cubana con su origen africano, europeo y chino, representado en una especie de obra de teatro con personajes que se transforman, se van mutando, cambian de nombre, al mismo tiempo que el o las narradores van entrando y saliendo de su rol de narrador. Parece imposible que se pueda leer un libro así, pero se puede. Es verdad, como muchos lectores dicen, hay dar gracias por la introducción critica de Echavarría, porque sin ella uno se pierde parte de la estructura y el significado, pero aun así, con las narradoras Auxilio y Socorro, se disfruta la voz del autor, y su humor. Es un libro genial.
