Haast iedereen doet in Kunst; de bakker bood mij met trots deze week een Gabriël aan, die echter een stumperige vervalsing bleek te zijn. De Nederlandse kunstmarkt 1940-1945 vertelt het verhaal van een hausse die zowel de Duitse bezetter als de Nederlandse bevolking vijf jaar lang in zijn greep hield. De nasleep duurt tot op de dag van vandaag, getuige de teruggave van de collectie Goudstikker en hernieuwde pogingen van anderen om hun destijds geroofde of verhandelde kunstwerken terug te eisen. De Nederlandse kunstmarkt maakte tijdens de Duitse bezetting stormachtige ontwikkelingen door. Als gevolg van achterlating of inbeslagname van particulier kunstbezit kwamen nooit eerder verschenen en zeer kostbare werken op de markt. De prijzen verveelvoudigden en de omzet bereikte ongekende hoogten. Zowel Nederlandse als Duitse kopers bestormden bijkans de kunsthandels en veilinghuizen. Ongeruste overheden faalden deerlijk in hun pogingen de markt te reguleren. In deze boeiende studie wordt van deze ontwikkelingen voor het eerst een evenwichtig beeld geschetst. In dit boek worden de prijsstijgingen en de herkomst van de verhandelde kunstvoorwerpen in kaart gebracht, evenals de verschillende groepen Duitse en Nederlandse kopers en hun redenen om kunst aan te kopen. Er wordt ruim aandacht besteed aan het drama dat zich door de anti-joodse maatregelen op de joodse kunstmarkt voltrok, en aan de dubbelrol van de bezetter als koper en kunsthandelaar. Ten slotte wordt licht geworpen op de vraag wie in laatste instantie de rekening voor de hausse betaalt.
