You may be familiar with the cradle or football hold for breastfeeding, but have you ever seen someone nurse while working out? How about on the operating table?
The Breastfeeding Project, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to providing breastfeeding education and support to women in the Central Florida area and throughout the nation, has collected a series of "Extreme Nursing" images on their site.

Here is a look at the nursing pictures they've compiled thus far, which range from sweet to unusual, touching to tear-jerking:

"I was diagnosed with brain cancer in August 2010. I immediately had two brain surgeries in the following weeks. Working with the Lactation Consultants at the hospital, I was able to breastfeed my eighteen-month-old daughter through both surgeries and treatment. Nearly two now, we still have a healthy breastfeeding relationship!"

"Here is a picture of me breastfeeding my fourth child during my c-section. I was still cut open on the operating table! They were in the process of stapling me back together. I demanded that I feed my daughter as soon as she took her first breath. They handed her to me and my husband within three minutes. It was amazing. Let your voice be heard - you do not have to wait to go into the recovery room to feed your newborn."
I spoke with The Breastfeeding Project about why they decided an "Extreme Nursing" photo gallery was a good addition to their page, and they explained:

The idea behind the extreme breastfeeding gallery was just to generate some excitement about breastfeeding and to have fun. We all had pictures of ourselves breastfeeding in funny or silly locations and we had all experienced the "breastfeeding gymnastics" that goes with breastfeeding a toddler.
We ran a competition in December 2011 where moms sent us their extreme breastfeeding pictures and then we had our fans vote for their favorite on Facebook. "Suck it Cancer" was the winner. We are planning to run a second competition this fall.
For more from The Breastfeeding project, including a look at the breastfeeding bags they're currently working on distributing to new moms, check out their web site and Facebook page.
I'm bowled over by the photo of the woman doing the 'plank' pose while breastfeeding, and the cancer photo had tears brimming in my eyes. While others are less 'extreme' and a few are just plain sweet, I'm a big fan of this gallery because as a new mom I was painfully shy about breastfeeding.
I wish I'd had more confidence to nurse whenever, wherever my child needed, rather than feeling confined to home or stressing out over having a place to hide should we be out in public. In hindsight, it seems sort of silly how uptight I felt about breastfeeding, but I really didn't know any better or see anyone doing it differently.

These are just a few of the practices still carried on today by people from the Amazon to Africa and remote Pacific islands
THE world can seem a strange place sometimes, with people in the far-flung corners of the Earth practicing traditions which may appear bizarre to others outside their communities.
From the young men who drink buckets of their elders’ semen to wife-swapping and living with corpses of relatives, here are some of the most extreme tribal rituals still existing today around the globe…
The nomadic Wodaabe people of Africa’s Sahel desert are known to steal each other’s wives at the annual Gerewol Festival.
The men paint their faces and decorate themselves with feathers to dance the Yaake – a courtship dance judged by three of the tribe’s most beautiful women.
Women can then choose to be “stolen” by the male tribe members – even if they already have a husband.
But the custom can lead to fights between men and even death.
The Sambia people of Papua New Guinea take boys away from their families at the age of seven and house them with older men for around ten years, according to the Orijin Culture.
The young men of the tribe drink the semen of their elders in order to gain masculinity so they can become adults.
They also have sharp sticks poked up their nostrils until they bleed to show how much pain they can endure.
The Toraja people of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, do not consider their deceased family members to be dead until their funerals – which can be a long time after they die.
In the meantime, their bodies are kept in the family home – sometimes for years – and treated as if they are still alive, with relatives washing them, changing their clothes and bringing them food and drink.
Even after they are buried, families dig up their dead loved ones every couple of years for ceremonies before placing them back in their graves.
These include running over hot coals and piercing their bodies with a bizarre – and stomach-turning – variety of objects.
Swords, musical instruments, bicycles and even a model boat are just a few of the things seen pushed through people’s cheeks and tongues at the festival.
The Sateré-Mawé people of Amazonas, Brazil, practice a painful coming-of-age ritual for their young men.
Boys as young as 12 gather bullet ants from the forest – stings from which are said to be 30 times more painful than those of bees – before putting them inside gloves made from leaves.
The young men wear the gloves 20 times for 10 minutes, performing a dance while the angry insects relentlessly sting them.
The tradition of land diving on the Pacific islands of Vanuatu sees young men and boys hurl themselves from a rickety wooden tower, with only pieces of tree vine wrapped around their ankles preventing them from slamming into the earth.
A successful jump sees brave participants dangling just inches from the ground after they’ve leapt off a platform.
It is known locally as the Naghol and is considered a right of passage for young men on the island.
The practice is meant to symbolise the pain one feels after losing a relative with people in the tribe often amputating multiple fingers during their lifetime.
It is mainly the women who practice the tradition, while males are best known for their distinctive penis sheaths, known as kotekas.
The Mursi and Surma peoples of Ethiopia are known for stretching out the lips of women with distinctive lip plates.
After knocking out the bottom two teeth at the age of around 15-18, the girl’s lip is pierced before being stretched out with larger and larger discs over time.
They are intended to attract a husband who also brings a dowry for her family - the size of which depends on the size of the disc.
Followers of the faith bleed for their beliefs as they plunge needles through their cheeks and dig hooks into their backs.
Sharp objects are used to commemorate the Hindu goddess Parvati giving a spear to god of war Murugan so he could slay the demon Soorapadman.
The women of the Kayan tribe of Mae Hong Son in Thailand have been dubbed the “giraffe women” and sport elaborate brass coils around their necks.
At the tender age of five the young girls start wearing the brass coil, and as they grow new coils are added.
Some believe it was used centuries ago as a way to prevent the women of the tribe from being enslaved by neighbouring communities as they would be deemed unattractive.
Men using whips, kitchen knives and even chains with blades attached to them to slice open their bodies to commemorate the death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Imam Hussein.
Hussein was killed during the 7th century Battle of Karbala in modern-day Iraq – an event that led to the current division between Shia and Sunni Muslims.
