Belgium’s naturists will have more room under the sun from next summer after a coastal town announced the creation of the country’s second nudist beach.
After having to skip a trip to the beach this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic, nudism enthusiasts will be able to plop down in Middelkerke, after the municipality decided to reserve parts of its coastal strip to the country’s nudist community.
This summer, authorities closed down the country’s only nudist beach in Bredene as they sought ways to enforce social distancing among the large crowds expected to flock to the Belgian coast as a blistering hot summer coincided with cancelled holidays due to the pandemic.
Middlekerke will open its future nudist haven in Lombardsijde a beach strip just north of the resort town of Niuewpoort and some 40 kilometres from Brugges.
The area was chosen because it is a secluded location with no apartment complexes nearby which is also shielded from curious onlookers since the IJzermonding natural reserve cuts it off from the Nieuwpoort crowds, according to De Standaard.
“The location is indeed good,” Middelkerke Mayor Jean-Marie Dedecker said, adding that the creation of the beach would draw in nudist tourism and could give a boost the local economy.
“The German naturist movement is large and wealthy,” he said. “In the Netherlands, some Germans even bought an apartment to stay in.”

The map of Europe is changing again for travellers from Belgium, as large parts of France, Greece and all of Ireland change colour following the latest update of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
According to the latest changes, France and Greece will turn almost entirely orange. Several regions in Italy are also changing from green to orange again on the ECDC map, meaning that the risk of infection is now considered “moderate” by the Belgian authorities.
In France, the regions that change will be: Lower Normandy, Upper Normandy, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Picardy, Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, Lorraine, Pays de la Loire, Brittany, Aquitaine, Limousin, Poitou-Charentes, Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes. The south of Corsica will turn red from Wednesday, as will the overseas department of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean.
Monaco will also turn red on Wednesday.
In Greece, change will hit the North Aegean Islands, Central Macedonia and Central Greece, meaning that almost the entire country is orange.
Attica and Crete remain red, while the South Aegean Islands, Epirus, Thessaly and the Ionian Islands will also turn red on Wednesday.
While still primarily green, the Italian regions of Sicily, Sardinia, Veneto and Lazio are turning orange. Vatican City is also orange.
In the Czech Republic, Prague has turned orange.
Northwestern Switzerland and Eastern Switzerland go from green to orange.
Ireland is currently completely orange, but the Northern and Western, Southern and Eastern and Midland regions will turn red from Wednesday.
In Sweden, the vast Upper Norrland region is turning green. Stockholm, however, does turn orange.
All travellers wanting to enter Belgium after at least 48 hours abroad are required to complete the Passenger Locator Form (PLF), regardless of the colour code of the zone they return from.
Since 1 July, the colour codes no longer matter for people who are fully vaccinated or recently recovered from a Covid-19 infection, as they do not have to get tested or quarantine upon return to Belgium, according to the Belgian authorities.
The only exception to this rule concerns fully vaccinated travellers returning from an area considered a “very high risk country” by Belgium, but there are currently no EU countries on that list.
Those returning from a red zone without being fully vaccinated or having a recovery certificate have to get tested on day 1 or 2 after they come home and quarantine until they get a negative test result.

It's not long until summer finally arrives for 2019 in Sussex.
And while it means the potential for long days out on the beach it also means nudists from all over the country could soon be getting their kit off on our beaches after the popular spots were unearthed on a website.
The site, walkingclub.org, lists dozens of nudist beaches across the country - including seven in East and West Sussex.
There are a handful of nudist beaches scattered across Sussex that you can enjoy while stripped off.
But be warned - while some of the beaches are well established (and some of them are just for those in the know) there are often a number of local rules and regulations in place.
Prosecutors say naturists shouldn't be targeted unless they are involved in an offence other than public nudity.

needs to be struck between the naturist's right to freedom of expression and the right of the wider public to be protected from harassment, alarm and distress.
So if you want to fully embrace the hot weather and say goodbye to those pesky tan lines - here's a list of the seven nudist beaches in Sussex.
This city beach is a short walk from Brighton town centre.
It is a shingle beach at east end of Brighton's sea front promenade (in Kemp Town, close to Brighton's Marina).
Officially opened in 1980, this is one of the best known, most accessible, most public naturist beach in the UK - and with some consequent problems. Not, perhaps, the best environment in which to try naturism for the first time, the website comments.
Situated to the east of Palace Pier between Peter Pan's playground and the marina, this short stretch of Brighton's pebbly foreshore entered the history books in 1979, when it was designated an official clothing-optional beach.
A vociferous "no" campaign was unable to persuade Brighton councillors that bathing in the nude was a disgrace and, following a trip to the site by a working party, the 59-strong Tory controlled-council passed the proposal.

The campaign for Brighton's nudist beach was led by Cllr Eileen Jakes and, as a result, she was accused of "pandering to weirdos and perverts".
Just to confuse everyone this naturist beach is in Portslade, access is via West Hove but locals all seem to call it Shoreham.
It is a pebble beach separated by a high sea wall from the commercial port of Shoreham Harbour. Nevertheless, it is highly prized by the many locals who use it, and a world away from the 'human zoo' of Brighton's main town centre naturist beach by the marina.
Camber Sands is situated between Rye in East Sussex and Lydd in Kent, just to the east of Rye Harbour and the Rother Estuary.
The large dune system is a site of scientific interest and nature conservation. The beach is several miles long, with about two miles of sand at Camber itself.
During the summer, the eastern end attracts thousands of visitors and families, many from the the nearby holiday parks. Despite this, naturists have long used the "remoter parts" of the shore - particularly mid-week.
In past years there have been some complaints about naturist use of this beach.
The naturist beach at Fairlight Glen lies on the coast between Hastings (about two miles to the west) and Rye to the east.
The beach is in Covehurst Bay, at the bottom of Fairlight Glen.
Naturist use of this beach was first recognised by the local council in 1978, although it had been in use for many years prior to that. It enjoyed official status until 1999 when it was reclassified as unofficial for unknown reasons.
Access is from the cliff top path through Hasting County Park.
The official path down to the beach was destroyed some years ago by a land slip, and hasn't been replaced.
Brave nudists say they still venture there though, as some locals have apprently done a great job in repairing the path and installing some new steps.
This beach is behind the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve.
There are plenty of secluded breakwaters and plenty of sand at low tide.
Nudists in the know report a few dog walkers but say swimming is possible without giving offence
Birling Gap is a very long but narrow shingle beach below tall, white cliffs.
Access is via a tower staircase by an National Trust car park and cafe. It is situated to the south of Eastdean, near Beachy Head in East Sussex. The nearest large town is Eastbourne.
Naturists have traditionally used parts of the beach further west (to the right if facing the sea) from the access point.
Church Norton beach is six miles south of Chichester in the Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve.
The south east facing beach is a huge shingle bank, backed by a large flat shingle area upon which rare birds nest.
At mid and low tide an area of flat sand is exposed. On the top of the stony bank there are loads and loads of shells - almost more in number than the stones.
It's a bit exposed so expect a slight breeze even on a still day. The beach is nearly a mile and a half long and perhaps because the car park is so small it does not get crowded.
