The year is 2013. Like New York, Los Angeles has been turned into a prison island for the United State's most undesirable criminals, like New York, Los Angeles is surrounded by a wall so no convict can escape from L.A and once deported to L.A. you can never return to the American mainland which has become a moral society. 16-years after he escaped from New York, One-Eyed former soldier Snake Plissken now the United State's most wanted outlaw is once again given another job for his freedom by the new President and L.A's security commander Malloy. Snake is sent into L.A. to recover a doomsday device that shuts all power sources on Earth from brutal terrorist Curevo Jones and the President's runaway daughter Utopia who has been brainwashed by Curveo into stealing the doomsday device, and the President personally wants Snake to eliminate Utopia for betraying her country. Like New York, Snake is injected with a engineered virus which will kill him in 9 hours if Snake fails the mission, if Snake succeeds in completing the mission, he will be given the antidote. Entering L.A, now inhabited by criminals, runaway teenagers, prostitutes and brutal gangs. Snake sets out to recover the doomsday device and kill Utopia, as Curevo and his army of terrorists prepares to invade the United States and can Snake escape from L.A. before the virus kills him in 9 hours?
The year is 2013 and Snake Plissken is back but this time it's L.A., which through the agency of earthquakes has become an island of the damned. But something has gone wrong in this new moral order, because the President's daughter has absconded to L.A. with a detonation device, and Snake is commandeered to retrieve it. But just below the surface there is a coiled Snake ready to strike.
Will somebody please tell me what John Carpenter was thinking when he made this piece of junk? I love Escape from NY, and looked forward to a sequel. I was stunned at how bad this film was when I saw it in the theater, and it still boggles my mind. Snake Plissken surfing down Santa Monica boulevard in front of a bad green screen? Cheesy animated helicopters that look like something out of a video game? A script that rehashed every plot point of the first film? Carpenter totally trashed anything he accomplished with EFNY by making this film, not to mention his already failing reputation.

Some people think that JC did made this film bad on purpose. I think they're giving him too much credit. First of all the films budget was 50 million dollars. That should have been fine, but 17 million went to Russel, JC and producer debra Hill. Now you've got a 33 million dollar movie, which is average for Hollywood. I think Carpenter got caught short on effects money and did the best he could with what was left. I can't see any reason why he would want to ruin the memory of the first film by making this a campy spoof on it. Money issues or not, the surfing scene is the worst one ever put to celluloid.

Well, I've vented enough. If you can't tell that I hate this movie...I hate this movie. The only good thing about it is that it makes Vampires and Ghosts of Mars seem like classics by comparison.
Sure, Snake Plissken is a relic from the ultra-macho 80s action craze. Sure, Carpenter's use of effects is often obvious (though occasionally brilliant). Sure, the film is nothing but a slab of highly fragrant cheese, but it's FUN cheese. It's unapologetic cheese. It's the extra $1.50 of gooey, greasy, slimey mozza that you throw onto your 16" meat-lover's... sure, it's excessive--maybe even unhealthy--but it makes the pizza.

Escape From L.A. is pure, unabashed, old-fashioned fun. It's one of those movies that everyone claims they hate, but they really love in that deep place, way down in their mind, where belching contests are still fun. It doesn't pretend to be anything more than entertainment--and it's good entertainment at that. When I first saw the trailers for this film, I groaned. Kurt Russell's faux-Eastwood-does-pirate routine rubbed me the wrong way, and I was unfamiliar with John Carpenter's work. After having seen the original Escape, Halloween, The Fog, Vampires, The Thing and especially Big Trouble In Little China I know that Carpenter is interested in one thing: giving his audience an escape from reality, and this film is perfect for that. It doesn't make a lot of sense, and it takes a lot of suspension of disbelief, but in to paraphrase Roger Ebert: Who can hate a film where Kurt Russell and a transsexual Pam Grier swoop from the sky in hang-gliders firing automatic weapons at an amusement park compound?

Add to the mix a delightful turn by Steve Buscemi and an amusing (albeit unrecognizable) cameo by Bruce "Don't Call Me Ash" Campbell, and you have a really fun, really dumb, really cool MOVIE!

Recommended for the 10 year old boy in all of us.
John Carpenter's Escape From L.A. is a go-for-broke action extravaganza that satirizes the genre at the same time it's exploiting it.
Director John Carpenter commented just before the release of Escape From L.A. (1996) that IF this movie was successful then he would consider a third movie and that the only place left for Snake to escape from would be Earth. "Escape From Earth" was just an idea - Carpenter never even gave that title, it's just something people assumed it would be called.

Escape From L.A. evidentley was not a commercial success and so the idea of a third movie went no further than Carpenter's comment. Depends on your point of view. Snake's decision is to essentially turn Earth's history back to the Victorian era, pre-electricity, where a man like him would flourish as a self-reliant gunfighter and despeardo. On the other hand it's suggested that humankind has deteriorated into tyranny so he essentially tears a corrupt society down and replaces it with a more egalitarian society 'Cabin in the Woods' style instead. a5c7b9f00b
