Robert Dean is a mild-mannered lawyer who works in Washington, D.C. He is on the trail of a kingpin named Pintero. Meanwhile, a politician named Thomas Reynolds is negotiating with Representative Phillip Hammersley about a new surveillance system with satellites. But, Hammersley declines; Reynolds has Hammersley killed, but the murder is caught on tape, and the taper is chased by Reynolds' team of N.S.A. Agents. The guy must ditch the tape, so he plants it on Dean (unbeknownst to Dean). Then, the N.S.A. decides to get into Dean's life. That is when Dean's life began to fall apart all around him, with his wife and job both gone. Dean wants to find out what is going on. Then, he meets a man named "Brill" who tells him that Dean has something that the government wants. Dean and Brill formulate a plan to get Dean's life back and turn the tables on Reynolds.
A successful lawyer finds himself the target of a treacherous NSA official and his goons after receiving evidence to a politically motivated murder, the only man that can help him is a former government operative turned surveillance expert.
It's closer to the Fugitive than other genre action films of late, though not as good. Gene Hackman was wonderful of course. Jon Voigt was very good as well. Will Smith did quite well but for him to be playing a hot-shot union labor lawyer at his obvious young age was a little difficult to believe. I had heard the film was full of neat gadgets and things. While it did have some...it did not have some of the gadgets I would expect it to have..Such as bugging devices that allow you to throw lasers on windows to pick up vibrations of sound off window panes etc. It's also ultimately a rather formula action film A much better than average one but still not a great or classic film by any means.

There was another couple of scenes which bothered me because it showed a contempt for the audience. How do I mean this? Well, when you include a throw-away scene, a slightly comic scene where Will Smith tries to buy lingerie for his wife..... you don't have a glaring continuity error within the scene to prove to the audience you aren't really paying much attention to what's going on so we can get away with this.... Okay... Smith buys lingerie for his wife... and a young lady is modeling a revealing type outfit. Smith tactlessly says his wife's bust is larger than the woman in front of him.

A little later when we see his wife....her bust is smaller than the models in the lingerie place.

Why was the line necessary if it wasn't true... Why would he buy too big lingerie for his wife as a Christmas present? And as a hot shot lawyer would he be as nervous and naive about this as he played it?

And then later on still.... the wife is wearing the perfectly fitting garments.

huh? How can this be?

Wow...must think we're stupid....

Well... it's a minor series of errors, but these types of things show how little some film-makers care about their product and the audience that views them.

Really enjoyed some of Hackman's line readings though. Worthwhile for this type of film.
I went into Enemy of the State expecting a rather silly "the NSA is out to get me" type action flick, but it proved to be very clever and genuinely suspenseful at parts. Will Smith gives what is easily one of his best performances (as he gets a part that isn't best described as "cocky hotshot"), and everyone else does a top-notch job as well. The script was fast paced but still cohesive, and the movie never turned into a big gunfight. My chief complaint was the chase scenes (of which there were several) due to the fact that they are shot from roughly 23 angles, all constantly being intercut. I guess it was intended to make it more intense (and give the idea that there are a multitude of cameras watching everyone), but the gimmick ended up simply making it difficult to tell just what was happening.

So long as you're not in the middle of a chase scene, the movie is great. And while it obviously pushes the limits of reality at points, it is still believable enough as to not be a large distraction. The entire thing is worth seeing just for the climax, which is quite intelligent and funny. Recommended viewing for fans of the genre, and even those that don't generally like this type of movie will probably enjoy it.
Enemy of the State isn't really a smart film, but it makes a concerted stab at pretending to be one.
Labor lawyer Robert Dean (Will Smith) finds himself being chased by rogue U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) agents looking for a tape that shows politician Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight) murdering Congressman Phillip Hammersley (Jason Robards) because Hammersley doesn't support a Telecommunications Security and Privacy Act that would expand domestic surveillance powers of law enforcement agencies. As Dean's life begins to fall apart, the only one who can help him is former government operative turned surveillance expert Edward Lyle (Gene Hackman).Enemy of the State is based on an original script by American screenwriter David Marconi. Reynolds shoots Lyle in the hand and demands the tape, so Robert takes him to the restaurant where the Pinteros are having dinner, knowing that it is being watched by the FBI. Saying only that Reynolds wants "the videotape", Robert makes Joey Pintero believe he's asking for the tape of Pintero and his mob buddies while Reynolds thinks he's talking about the Hammersley tape. Reynolds gets in Pintero's face and demands the tape, and Pintero reacts by pushing him away. Suddenly everyone pulls out their guns. Pintero refuses again to hand over the tape, so Reynolds and his NSA goons head for the door. Suddenly, the cook fires a shot, and everyone else opens fire on each other. Minutes later, the FBI breaks in to find Robert and the cook the only ones left standing. As the paramedics take away the two survivors, Fiedler (Jack Black) and Jamie (Jamie Kennedy), Robert slips out the door. Lyle exits the van and, carrying Babe, they slip away. In the final scene, Robert and Carla (Regina King) are watching a news report about the bill being dead—for now. Robert, who has been cleared of any wrong doings, changes the channel and discovers a goodbye message from Lyle, who has escaped to a tropical location. The unrated version of Enemy of the State that has been released on DVD features several extended plot scenes but one has to decide on one's own whether they are an enrichment for the movie or not. But there are also some new scenes that feature some more cursing or erotic. a5c7b9f00b
