Movies with rich philosophical undercurrents rarely do well in my country and so it was with Enemy Mine. It didn't last long in the first run theaters and I had to scramble to catch a screening at a seedy second run movie house where it was half of a double feature.

Dennis Quaid is a terribly under-appreciated actor except among the best of critics. He has that unusual talent of portraying what should be an insufferable smart aleck and yet be very sympathetic at the same time.

This movie has a rich message involving philosophy and morality. It pulls the heart strings too and I must confess that I had to fight off

tears at certain scenes. It reminded me a lot of another movie, Hell in the Pacific, about an American soldier (portrayed by Lee Marvin) and a Japanese soldier (Toshiro Mifune) who found themselves together on an isolated island.

Enemy Mine did have some hilarious moments though such as when SPOILER: the alien tried to impart some of the moral precepts of his society to the earthman even naming the great enlightened teacher who brought them. Quaid countered with a moral teaching of his own which duly impressed the alien and when the latter asked who taught it, his answer was: Mickey Mouse.

The most touching moment was when the son of the alien was being initiated with a formal ceremony into acceptance into that planet's society with Quaid standing in as father because his former enemy alien had died.

If you are teaching a class in philosophy, sociology or comparative religion, this would be a good film to show to your class.
This is a very underrated film. I saw it again last night with my 8 years old son and both enjoyed it a lot. Despite the bad FX. The real gem in the movie is the message. The movie is one of the few examples when the FX works for the movie, and not the movie for the FX. Anyway, the racial theme has an over the top treatment and remember me these days when tolerance is not a thing that people use everyday. Petersen show us that very clear and the movie (despite the sentimental ending) served me to talk with my son about tolerance and how people of the world is very stupid and let them go for skin color or religion. I am a latin guy who live in Central America and suffered intolerance in USA because of my ethnic condition a couple of times when I visited that country . Too shame.

Everybody has to watch it, specially after 9/11.

In Germany the movie was shown in a version that is 1 minute longer than the International Version. Two scenes were prolonged. Be aware that the German DVD only features the International Version. Yes. Enemy Mine is based on a novella written by Barry Longyear in 1979 No. Author Barry Longyear was quoted as stating that 20th Century Fox asked him to write in the subplot involving the scavenger mine because the audience would not figure out that the title 'Enemy Mine' was actually a play on the phrase 'My enemy.' a5c7b9f00b
