Alsace, near the German border in spring of 1945, American forces begin to discover new horrors of war, the concentration camps. On a night patrol, a lieutenant discovers ad German officer standing atop of two executed Jews. The lieutenant takes the German prisoner to his commanding officer, Major Reynolds. While they discuss the fate of the prisoner, the German is confronted with haunted visions of his past, even witnessing the crime all over again from a distance.
"In times of war, emotions can get the best of us," warns Major Reynolds to a shaken-up soldier who just brought in a Nazi prisoner responsible for executing a Jewish family in a forest. The Nazi Prisoner shrewdly escapes, while his fate is being decided by a ranking Allied officer, On the run, he begins to see ghostly figures appear from the night in the forest where he killed the Jewish family. The visions intensify until he falls into a replay of the horrific scene of the execution. Unable to change the past, the Nazi must watch himself commit the murders all over again. Just as he gets to the point of where he was captured, he awakes from a dream-like trance only to find he had never made the escape attempt. The ranking allied officer walks over to the prisoner and makes his decision, "This man is to be put to death." The Nazi prisoner hears voices from his haunted past as the allied soldiers arm themselves and prepare for his execution. As a last ditch effort, he decides to run for his life. For a moment, it seems as if he will make it into freedom. A bullet is fired and he drops to the ground. He falls, fatally wounded, somehow back to the scene of his crime and witnesses his true evilness before his eyes are shut forever.
