It has been a long time since I read the first volume in the award winning Y: The Last Man series, and it took me some time to fully memorize the previous happenings and plot twists before getting straight on track. Second volume started quite well, but I did find myself being back to the reasons why this series failed to make a long lasting and positive impression, and why I felt this to be more problematic than entertaining look at the subject of one man - millions of women.This, of course, is very heavy on social criticism towards gender issues and equality. And rightly so. It is clear to me that there is quite a lot of research behind the developments that might put some readers on the fence with, but when experiencing negative backlash within the mind, there is Google that helps seeing that the knee jerk reaction might not be as justified as one could think. Our leading male character, the last man on earth, is not the kind of man you would wish to hold the answers to the mystery of male extinction. Young, naive, arduous and little on the dumber side even with a warm heart. There is too many angry women, I mean seriously. Even one angry woman is a pain in the ass, but having tens of angry women is an annoyance I would not wish to be needing to deal with. The plot makes very little sense to me at this point. Bunch of angry feminist-scum chasing one man like rabid animals for reasons of stupidity. Or that at least is how it looks at this very moment. I also squint to the idea of plot moving on only due to extremely stupid and illogical decisions each character makes. It gets tiring, and it gets that very quickly if not soon enough. I find this kind of story building to be too easy and lazy, and it only works in horror movies where it is almost an requirement to want that leading character to drop dead. That, I figure, is not what Y: Last Man is trying to achieve.I have couple volumes on me, and I will give them a read, perhaps I find something else to like than those few humorous dialogues between now and then.
