1/27: (Intro chapter review) I can already tell that this book is going to be a bad time. Unfortunately, there is a mythology that supports a negative view that completing a dissertation is drudgery and demeaning, consisting only of a series of hoops to jump through and hurdles to overcome. (p.3)So, writing a dissertation isnt anything at all like the rest of the PhD experience? Whew! Thats news to me. Pray continue, Carol M. Roberts!What makes the difference between a peak experience and a heartbreak hill experience? Attitude. Attitude is everything!(p.3)Oh! So thats the thing that keeps people from getting their dissertations done. Not getting their funding axed, not wanting to have a job that includes dental insurance after years as a student, not wanting to live off pitiful stipends forever, not wanting to start a family before the age of 30 -- its just attitude. Well, problem solved! Im sure glad Carol Roberts cleared this up for me. 1/28: (Full book review)I cant remember the last time I finished a book so angry. I am seething at Carol Roberts and her pointless SECOND EDITION of The Dissertation Journey. This is considered quality academic advice? Dont plagiarize? Use primary sources? Who is this lady and how is it possible that she has been employed in academia? Thanks for the 100-level frosh academic advice, but you know your book was supposed to have been written for DOCTORAL CANDIDATES, right? HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS BOOK HAS TWO EDITIONS?Further, her tone throughout the work -- dont procrastinate! if no one wants to be on your committee, be friendlier! -- consistently implies that students who dont finish arent working hard enough and arent reaching out to faculty in the proper way. Now, learning how to be an effective time manager and having personal drive for success are important in higher ed. However, if you arent good at those things you 1. Probably didnt get into grad school or 2. Probably didnt make it through two years of doctoral coursework or the advancement to candidacy. Never mind that most PhD students are also teaching/research assistants and may very well have jobs outside their universities or new families of their own. But hey! If theres a problem with people finishing their dissertation, it must reflect a personal failing of the individual and their PROCRASTINATION -- not a problem in broader academic culture. Anybody seen my bootstraps? I need to get up.ANYWAY... if youre looking for QUALITY advice for grad students/doctoral candidates, check out The Chronicle of Higher Education. Their advice columns for grad students are wonderfully supportive and Ive enjoyed reading them immensely. I cant say either of those things about The Dissertation Journey.
