I don’t dispute it is a romance. Eric and Steve are an extremely lovey-dovey couple once they get their act together. Which takes awhile as they maneuver outside interference. And which seems odd at first since Steve is supposedly this rough-and-tumble heterosexual soldier. But then he’s so damned pretty who gives a shit.Tsurugi Kai can draw quite well, and has breathed a unique look into her characters, mainly their eye structure. Of course, every artist has his or her signature style. Most yaoi enthusiasts will immediately recognize a Youka Nitta drawing or an Ayano Yamane or a Nekota Yonezou creation. Tsurugi Kai is no different, and her work is very well done, certainly worth a look.However, the plot, engaging as it is, shot off in numerous directions at certain points, a confusing annoyance. On the other hand, the character development is excellent. Eric isn’t an airhead uke and Steve isn’t a brutally sadistic seme; they’re just a pair of headstrong men who are determined to get what they most desire.As for the romance, it depends on the reader, and what he or she prefers. Naturally, after Steve and Eric confess to one another, they spend a lot of time in bed. They’re young and in love, and their romantic interludes are the epitome of what ‘intimacy’ and ‘initial excitement’ are all about. I found their impassioned pillow talk and regular lovemaking kind of nice for a change. Is this realistic or not, I can’t say. But then who cares. If you read a book and enjoy it, the author did their job, and I did enjoy My Life with You. Cheesy, over-the-top, or just plain perfect, it is a yaoi I will read again and again.
