I selected the picture book Breaking News: Bear Alert by David Biedrzycki based the enthusiastic recommendation of my school LMC director. The story unfolds as two bears awaken from for their long winter’s hibernation and become the subjects of the local newscast. This fantasy escapade is an interruption to a children’s show called Our Furry Planet: “We interrupt this story to bring you a special report…”. The reader must piece this breaking news story together by reading the “scrolling” tickers from the Skycam 3 helicopter at the bottom of each page, “view” the man on the scene interviews as projected on breaking newscasts, and read the speech bubbles from televised interviews with the “persons on the street”. The colorful cartoon like illustrations create the backdrop for the chaos these two carefree bears create while lumbering through town on Pooh Street, entering Teddy’s Dinner for none other than “Too Hot Two Cold or Just Right Porridge”, and riding the escalator while casually shopping in Paddington’s Department Store! Oblivious to the comical hysteria they are creating, the bears journey through town, while burglars (and their cat!) seize the opportunity during this ongoing mayhem to burglarize the department store. Each segment of the broadcast is spread over two open pages (landscape orientation) to provide the illusion of a wide-screen news broadcast. Biedrzycki’s skilled artistry depicts the town’s people and bear’s developing reactions in this calamitous breaking news fantasy! Biedrzycki includes references to children’s books, comical puns, and requires the reader to explore his landscape illustrations to piece the story together. For this reason, this book appears best suited for individual or small group reading and would be most appropriate for ages 5-8. For instructional purposes Breaking News: Bear Alert is well suited for reading and understanding details within complex texts/illustrations and unraveling character perspectives.
