This book is a catalogue that accompanied a 2009 exhibition in Ghent, Belgium. The aim of the show was to explore how contemporary artists rely on the notion of the ‚picturesque’ in their work. ‚Picturesque’ is an early romantic aesthetic category at the intersection of a double dialectic. It refers to a certain kind of landscape that is suitable as a subject for a painting, but also to a fragment of reality that could be viewed as if it were part of a painting. So the picturesque brings into relief the dialectic between place and image. Additionally it plays on the tension between nature and culture. A building can only become picturesque once it has been subjected to the forces of nature and the ravages of time. Hence, the picturesque is associated with contingency and unpredictability of erosive processes, and with the heterogeneity of natural habitats that have been affected by human intervention. This double dialectic has proved to be a fertile ground for contemporary artistic practice and aesthetic reflection. ‚Beyond the Picturesque’ provides an intriguing survey of this territory against the background of key societal and artistic developments over the last two centuries: the wholesale appropriation of landscape by late-capitalist forces, the emergence and consolidation of consumer and leisure culture, the growing awareness of ecological fragility, and the immense impact of photography and film on the status of images. Steven Jacobs’ lead essay (in both Dutch and English) lays out the main issues: after a brief introduction on the origin of the picturesque in the design of late 18th century English landscape gardens it focuses on the appropriation of the picturesque by the emerging practice of landscape urbanism, the revaluation of the notion in the work of land artist Robert Smithson, and influential developments in post-modern photography that embrace a picturesque aesthetic (New Topographics, Mark Klett’s Rephotographic Surveys and the reframing of historical traditions of landscape imagery by photographers such as Joel Sternfeld and Axel Hütte). The focus on photography is reflected in the selection of artistic works in the exhibition. Its core is formed by work of 8 photographers, complemented by artists working in other media. The full list of artists represented at the show can be looked up at the museums website (smak.be). In addition to Jacobs’ essay, English texts have been included by John Macarthur (on the rediscovery of picturesque elements in the practice of contemporary aerial photography) and by urbanist Mirko Zardini. Also Robert Smithson’s seminal 1973 essay „Frederick Law Olmsted and the Dialectical Landscape” has been reproduced in full. The book is produced as a handsome, carefully designed hardback. For readers interested in contemporary debates in art, photography and urbanism it is certainly worth having in their library.
