I’ve read a few novelizations and sought out the Nightmare on Elm Street series as I thought it might be something I’d like to have a stab at writing. I didn’t get very far with these.I started reading part one and got bored after about ten pages as it was like reading the screenplay; it is word for word, action for action what happens in the movie.I skipped part two, which I think is a complete mess of a movie and definitely my least favourite in the series.And so to part three: Dream Warriors, probably my favourite. I started reading and it wasn’t the same as the film, but that isn’t a positive statement, it’s totally lacking in the fear and suspense of the opening dream sequence (personally one of my favourites!). But the nail in the coffin came when Kirsten wakes up from her dream. In the movie she goes to the bathroom and BOOM! the tap grabs her hand! She isn’t awake! As the tap morphs into Freddy’s razor-fingered claw, his reflection appears in the mirror, chuckling maniacally. His tap/hand slashes across Kirsten’s wrist and she screams. Her mum bursts in and the bathroom is normal again. Kirsten’s wrist is slit and she is confused to find herself holding a razor blade. She faints. And…scene! Pretty cool, eh?Now, here’s what happens in the book…Kirsten wakes up from the dream, lifts a paperweight from her bedside table and throws it at her mirror (I have no idea why) then lifts the biggest shard and slits her wrists.Any fan of these films will realize just how stupid that is. The whole point of Freddy’s killings, in Dream Warriors especially, is that Freddy is murdering these teens and making it look like suicide since no one believes them that a bogeyman in their dreams is doing it.I decided to read no further.Some novelizations I have read have surpassed the film they are based on - I can’t tell enough people how much better Terry Brooks’s novel of The Phantom Menace is than the film. Really, if you’re a Star Wars fan read that book and see what that film could have been if George had hired a proper writer.Unfortunately this drivel comes nowhere close to competing with this group of films, and whoever decided to change that intro to Dream Warriors needs slapped.
