A small desert town has been harassed for months by a gang of drag racers, but so far no one has done anything to stop them. One day, a ghostly black car shows up, challenging members of the group to race, then killing them one by one. Neither the gang nor the police can catch the car or its driver, but some investigating into the gang's past may reveal just who's behind all this.
Packard Walsh and his motorized gang control and terrorize an Arizona desert town where they force drivers to drag-race so they can 'win' their vehicles. After Walsh stabs the decent teenager Jamie Hankins to death for being intimate with a girl whom Walsh wants for himself, the mysterious Jake Kesey arrives, an extremely cool motor-biker with an invincible car. Jake befriends Jamie's girlfriend Keri Johnson, takes Jamie's sweet brother Billy under his wing and manages what Sheriff Loomis can not - the methodical and otherworldly elimination of Packard's criminal gang.
I&#39;m giving this movie somewhere between 6 and 7. I can&#39;t say it was the best-made movie I&#39;ve ever seen: All the race scenes are very similar - this is a shame because when the leader of the bad guys gets splatted it&#39;s a major anti-climax (it would have been better to have the wraith exposed first..) Moving on, I liked this because it has two dorky elements that remind of &#39;Bill and Ted&#39; and for some reason the leader of the bad guys kinda reminds me of a nasty version of Harry from &#39;Dumb and Dumber&#39;. Sheryl Fenn looks stunning - I admit that&#39;s the real reason I wanted to see this - golden-tanned Baywatchesque. There are also some very beautiful panoramas.<br/><br/>The music score is cool too: Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue, and that scene when the girls take the burgers and fries out on the roller skates actually made me go out after the film and visit my nearest Mcdonalds (which is very rare these days).<br/><br/>This movie is just how I (an ignorant European) imagine 80&#39;s California: wild, colourful, beautiful, fun, trash. A cool movie!
It amazing at how the film moves along, doesn&#39;t get sidetracked, and presents a very interesting camp fire style story.<br/><br/>The film is centers around the arrival in town of Jake. Jake quickly befriends Billy Hankins and Keri Johnson. However, by doing this, he runs afoul of Packard Walsh.<br/><br/>Walsh is a charismatic, yet evil leader of a gang of thugs who race and cheat people out of their cars. They are desert rats who feel they own the roads.<br/><br/>As we learn, they are also murderers. Not long ago, they brutally murdered Jamie Hankins, as he was having sex with the afore mention Keri Johnson, a girl that Packard desires, and will stop at nothing to make sure she is his for life.<br/><br/>As the gang challenges Billy Hankins to a race,a black turbo interceptor pulls up. The challenge is on, and gang member Augie Fisher is more than happy to take him on.<br/><br/>Instead, Augie becomes the first victim, because they aren&#39;t racing your average driver. They are racing a spirit that has returned to Earth to avenge his own death. Augie crashes over the cliff, and his car becomes a twisted, burning wreck.<br/><br/>WHen he is pulled from the car, his body is unmarked, but his eyes are missing. This is soon the fate for another member of Packard&#39;s gang, Minty. Skank and Gutter boy are killed when the Wraith crashes into the gang&#39;s garage. However, the Wraith doesn&#39;t kill Rughead, since Rughead had nothing to do with his murder.<br/><br/>The wraith finds Packard, standing with a knife, ready to kill Keri. The Wraith challenges Packard to a race. It&#39;s a race to the death that climaxes with both cars crashing into each other, causing a massive explosion.<br/><br/>Jake meets up with Keri, and has now revealed his true identity. He is in fact Jamie Hankins, and has returned so that he and Keri could be together. After dropping off the turbo to Billy Hankins (who after Jake/Jamie leaves, has now figured out that the Wraith was indeed his deceased brother).<br/><br/>The film closes out with Jamie and Keri driving off into the desert, finally able to fulfill their destiny of being together.
The movie has an absurd script, fueled by that current B-movie staple, the idiot plot--a plot that proceeds only because all, or most, of the characters, act like idiots.
