When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.
A race of non-corporeal, parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet looking for hosts have come to Earth and basically taken over the human race. It's believed that, once inside a body, all memories of the host human are gone. Some few free humans remain hidden from them, forming a resistance group. When an alien Seeker captures a girl named Melanie and puts a Wanderer in her body, she hopes to find out where the remaining humans are gathered, but Melanie, a strong fighter able to converse with the alien in her commandeered body, convinces the Wanderer to say nothing. Disappointed by the lack of progress (though suspecting an empathy for the human), the Seeker informs the Wanderer that she'll be removed and placed in a new host while she herself will enter Melanie. With human lives at risk, Melanie convinces Wanderer to run away and hide out with the humans, but finding them doesn't mean they'll allow an alien presence among them. Jared (Melanie's boyfriend) wants her dead, but Jeb (Melanie's uncle) wants to wait, and Ian, tasked with guarding her, finds himself siding with Jeb. As Ian begins to fall for Melanie, a strange love triangle develops, with Ian wanting Wanderer (inhabiting Melanie's body), Jared wanting Melanie (imprisoned inside her own body), and no one knowing any way to separate the two without killing both.
I found it very entertaining, and I was happy that it followed the book so well. The characters were pretty much as they were described in the book and they were all likable in the movie. I wondered how they would handle the dialog between Wanda and her host, because that is a lot easier to do in a book than a movie, but I think it worked as well as possible given the medium. I guess they could have had a little face in the back of her head talking, that would have been really funny/bad. If you liked the book, you will like the movie. If you like romance, you will like the movie, if you like an interesting alien, you will like the movie. If you want Star Wars, I'm not so sure.
First of all I want to say it is an OK movie. If I were to see it without having read the book I truly might have liked it a lot more than I did now.

The book brings you more nuance to the story and the characters. In Wanderer I miss the realization of her love for Jamie and Jarod and her determination to keep them safe at all cost. I miss the inner struggle she goes trough when she realizes that her species might be wrong in their quest for peace and improvement.

Ian, Jarod and even Kyle learn to accept Wanda as she is. In the book you can feel the struggle these men go through to find acceptance. I didn't find this as much in the movie.

I didn't like the action scenes. The book has none to speak of. I feel the action was put there to please the crowds. And it took away from the depth of the story. In the book there is a great sense of community. Wanderer learns to love not only Ian, Jamie and Jarod. She is genuinely hurting when people of the community suffer or even die.

She helps Walter in his final struggle with cancer, she is devastated by the Seeker shooting Wes and she feels deeply the pain of Lily's grief after losing her lover. The reason why Wanda learns to love humans and even humanity is taken away in the movie because these stories are not included. They all contribute to her decision not to be a parasite anymore.

I know it is impossible to include everything. I sure hoped to see a more layered movie. Stephenie Meyer gave us a book to think about. She invites us to look at our selves and our actions. The movie barely entertains us. I dare not talk about the performances because I believe it was the story in itself that prevented a better portrayal of the characters. No layers in the story, no layers in the characters, it could have been better.

So it is an OK movie for the masses but a poor translation of the depth of the book
The Host is top-heavy with profound, sonorous conversations, all tending to sound like farewells. The movie is so consistently pitched at the same note, indeed, that the structure robs it of possibilities for dramatic tension.
