On his death bed, Egyptologist Professor Henry Morlant orders his servant to wrap a valuable jewel in his hand and place a statue of Anubis along with his body in the family crypt. His hope is that Anubis will accept the diamond and allow Morlant to pass through to the afterlife. When someone steals the jewel from his tomb, Morlant rises from the dead just as he predicted he would and seeks his revenge. The heirs to his estate, Ralph Morlant and his cousin Betty Harlon and her friend Miss Kaney arrive at the estate just as their uncle rises from his grave. With the assistant of the butler, the local minister Nigel Hartley, the elder Morlants solicitor Mr. Broughton and an Egyptian, Aga Ben Dragore, they try to make sense of what is happening and determine who among them has stolen the jewel.
Aga Ben Dragore, a knife-wielding, enigmatic Egyptian Arab, is seeking a sacred jewel which has been stolen from an ancient tomb. The thief tells him that he sold it to Professor Morlant, a fanatical Egyptologist who fervently believes in the pagan power of the ancient Egyptian gods. Dying from a mysteriously disfiguring ailment, Morlant entrusts his faithful manservant to bandage the jewel in his hand and warns him of dire consequences if his dying wishes aren't carried out. After his burial in an Egyptian-type tomb on his estate, an anonymous robber steals the precious stone from the corpse. Although the ghastly-looking dead man rises at the next full moon to seek revenge, neither he nor the audience know which member of the household possesses the powerful jewel.
T. Hayes Hunter directed this British horror thriller, inspired by "The Mummy", which also starred Boris Karloff, who here plays Professor Morlant, a fanatical believer in Egyptian Gods and magic who, when he realizes that he's dying, instructs his loyal servant(played by Ernest Thesiger) to bandage a sacred jewel in his hand, so that when he dies and is entombed, its magical powers will enable him to rise from the dead and begin a new life. The servant does as instructed, but unfortunately the jewel is stolen by an unknown thief, but that doesn't stop Morlant from rising anyway... Boris is fine as always, but film is otherwise slow and talky, with a most unsatisfactory ending.
Professor Morlant (Boris Karloff) is near death. He orders his servant Laing (Ernest Thesiger) to bury him with the Eternal Light--a jewel that will bring him immortality. However, after his funeral, the jewel is stolen and there are seven minor characters who just end up in his house that night. That Karloff comes to life (somehow) and sets off to find who stole his jewel.<br/><br/>This was considered a lost film for many years until a full print was discovered in Britain a few years ago. It was made available on DVD by MGM and the transfer is a beauty--crisp clear picture and good sound. Too bad the picture isn&#39;t that good.<br/><br/>There are far too many needless characters cluttering up the movie and not one is given a full characterization. Also their acting is atrocious--Ralph Morland (Anthony Bushell) screams every line; Ms. Kaney (Kathleen Harrison) is shrill and whiny and they throw in a pastor (Ralph Richardson in his first role) for no good reason! The script is full of terrible lines and horribly bad &quot;comedy&quot;.<br/><br/>DEFINITE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! Also the plot ceases to make sense a few times: how does Karloff come to life again? It&#39;s hastily said that he wasn&#39;t really dead--just in a trance but that doesn&#39;t wash. How is he able to walk around? He was bedridden before death. Why is his face so disfigured? Why can&#39;t he speak? Where does this superhuman strength come from (he&#39;s able to bend steel bars)? And how about Richardson at the end. Why was he in the crypt? How did he get inside a statue? As you can see, there are far too many unexplained aspects of the story. SPOILERS END!!!!!!!!!!!!!<br/><br/>Still it DOES have a few virtues.<br/><br/>It is atmospheric and the sets themselves are beautiful. Also Karloff&#39;s resurrection is a highlight and he&#39;s downright frightening going after people--an excellent makeup job was done on him. Also Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Richardson and Thesiger give good performances. Karloff though is brilliant--he can&#39;t speak after he&#39;s resurrected and his pantomiming skills (undoubtedly learned from his Frankenstein role) are incredible. But he only comes alive during the closing 30 minutes. Before that there&#39;s a good 50 minutes of bad dialogue, plotting and acting to contend with. Still, for a horror fan, it&#39;s worth catching once just for the closing 30 minutes. But I can honestly only give this a 5.

How did Karloff do this film if he was under contract with Universal? Did that contract only apply in the US? a5c7b9f00b
