200 years in the future a Martian police unit is dispatched to transport a dangerous prisoner from a mining outpost back to justice. But when the team arrives they find the town deserted and some of the inhabitants possessed by the former inhabitants of the planet.
Set 200 years in the future, intergalactic cop Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) and her team have an assignment of transferring a dangerous criminal named Desolation Williams (Ice Cube) to a prison in the outpost city of Chryse on the planet Mars. But in a turn of events, an adjacent mining team on the Red Planet has unearthed an ancient Martian defense device that unleashes warrior ghosts of the planet's original inhabitants who in turn possess most of the workers. Upon arriving at the outpost, Ballard and her team, including Desolation Williams, must band together to survive the vengeful spirits bent on eradicating all human life on their planet.
Yeah, "Desolation" Ice Cube "Williams" was by far the most God awful character name EVER in a movie, book, screen play, or 6 year old made up fictional character. Natasha was pretty, but that really doesn't rescue a movie that sinks lower than the water from an Anaconda movie that Ice Cube has also starred in. The "evil" characters in this film are about as hilarious as the "Noid" from the old Dominos pizza commercials. I actually took a girl on a date to see this timeless horror movie. It's sad when you start laughing at a movie, that wasn't intended to be laughed at. I would advise readers to buy this just to dog on it (even without the effects of alcohol), but I don't want people to give this film any more gross because Carpenter might actually make a second one and that would be about as enjoyable as me shaving myself with a brillo pad...they're both painful.
Hmm. Let's see....What is it that everyone wants to see in a movie these days? Oh! Wait! I got it!! Oscar winning performances, something that HAS to appeal to every crowd, you know, the usual stuff that critics whine about. Whining is what everyone seems to be doing these days when it comes to really fun movies such as John Carpenter's Ghosts Of Mars. Using this movie as an example of trash is just not acceptable. I've been waiting for months to see this movie because of the fact that it was written and directed by "The Master of Terror" himself, John Carpenter. I read a few reviews on it and I wasn't impressed at all to say the least. Bare with me here folks as you read along. One newspaper said that it was "Planet Red With Embarrasment!" and had the nerve to give it zero stars out of five. Just another critic that wants to see an oscar winning movie. Well, you know what people? WHO CARES!!

What you must do is go out and see this movie. Just relax and have some fun. If you want to see an oscar winning movie, don't see Ghosts of Mars. Go see Captain Corelli's Mandolin if you want that kind of stuff. It wasn't intended to be critically acclaimed nor was it intended to be that serious! Carpenter's movies never were! He enjoys making fun movies for himself and for everyone else. He knows that and so should you.

I don't really want to get into a huge premise so I'll just keep it short and to the point. Cops are on Mars trying to bring back a dangerous prisoner and end up getting into a big battle with screwed up people posessed by ghosts that used to inhabit Mars. There!

In light of Carpenter's filming techniques, he uses a whole load of new stuff that I've never seen him do in this film. Such as the numerous flashback within flashback sequences. He does this so good that you can still keep track of what's going on very easily. Some kind of strange stop motion frame skipping that doesn't seem necessary but adds a lot of ambience to the mood. Some frame on frame footage. Oh and let's not forget the soundtrack. Brilliant!! Being a huge fan of heavy music, Carpenter wrote a lot of heavy stuff for his soundtrack. Interesting how he did that considering he has a rapper in one of the lead roles and doesn't resort to the common rap music that's used in so many movies today. Rock music just gets you into the whole action thing moreso than rap. Not that I don't like rap music, I love it, I just find it interesting.

In conclusion, there's just so much to say about this movie and it's so much fun to watch. I think everyone in the theater came out and thought that they had a lot of fun. During the film I heard many hoots and "yeah!"'s. There are some cheesy one-liners in there thrown in for good measure! Just don't take this film seriously and you should come out of it feeling completely satisfied. Carpenter fan or not, get ready for a thrill ride that'll have you drooling for a sequel.

10/10
Carpenter pulls out all the action-adventure stops, but he and coscripter Larry Sulkis forgot to write dialogue the audience could listen to without howling in disbelief.
