Life isn't fair. The Joker escapes from Arkham Asylum. Bruce Wayne puts on his Batman suit, mask, and cape, and goes in pursuit. He's soon found the Joker and begins a fight to subdue the red-eyed, sneering villain. Then, suddenly, things take a surprising turn: the Joker becomes the least of Batman's worries. New enemies appear: it's as if he's found himself in another set of comic books. Can he hold his own?
I saw this online recently and it was not quite what I had expected. First off, the production quality is, if nothing else, rather, surprisingly top-notch. It obviously would have to go through a lot of arbitration and legal wrangling to legitimately be shown anywhere (think of what Warner brothers and Fox would do in order to get this out there, which might not be much since they already protect their own franchises). But there was a good deal of money put into it, and it looks terrific in terms of the creature design, location, technical aspects on all various fronts. It certainly isn&#39;t some kids with Party City costumes floating around with a camcorder on a street. That being said, lets call a spade a spade: it&#39;s a fan-boy movie. <br/><br/>It starts off with a heated one-on-one with Batman and Joker (not bad actor playing the dark knight, though the one playing Joker, dare I say it, goes a little over the top too much). Then an alien from the FOX comes along and kills joker, and then Predator from FOX also comes along to fight Batman, and this is what ends up mostly being the short. It&#39;s action packed and with, well, lots and lots of predators as the film goes on. In the sense of being a guilty pleasure, of watching it and enjoying it even as the better sensibility says that it&#39;s pretty stupid, it&#39;s really not that bad. <br/><br/>But it&#39;s definitely not what some people have put on such a high pedestal, which is that it&#39;s better than ANY other Batman-related feature ever created. Nice try, but there needs to be a STORY, not just a bunch of crazy franchise-cross-pollinating.
I had the honor of seeing this gem as an extra on a DVD-magazine called Movie FX. I&#39;m sure glad I did, as it&#39;s one of the most professional-looking short films I&#39;ve ever seen! Shot on only $30,000 in only 4 days (!), this film is easily better than both the giant-budget Tim Burton Batman film and the Alien Vs. Predator film combined! Writer/director Sandy Collora is a former creature effects artist, having worked on films like Men in Black, Leviathan, Dogma and Predator 2. In recent years he&#39;s made a series of stunning shorts, including this, 2002&#39;s Archangel, and most recently, another Batman film titled World&#39;s Finest. Collora is obviously a guy with vision and talent, and I certainly hope to see more of his work in the future. He gives the film a wonderful look and a dark atmosphere that fits the short perfectly. Though the film isn&#39;t really driven by the two actors in the film, Clark Bartram and Andrew Koenig, but they&#39;re both good in their roles nonetheless. Because of Collora&#39;s FX background, the alien and predator suits are very, very impressive. I&#39;m amazed by how well done these creature effects were with next to no money. Further more, the effects are used very effectively and never take the front seat.<br/><br/>If this short is any indication, we&#39;ll be hearing more from Mr. Collora in the future. Even if your not a Batman, Alien or Predator fan, check this film out, it&#39;s slick and impressive as hell!<br/><br/>8/10.
